    Cold weather starts

At high altitudes and cold temperatures, if you need a starting aid, have an assistant play a hand held LIT propane torch over the intake, once the air filter is removed. The hot air from the torch will greatly assist ignition. Once the engine starts, you might need to use more accelerator...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

One step closer to AIR CONDITIONING!!! Finished the wiring for the high side system, this uses the back battery/right alternator to power the AC, accessory outlet and rear view camera. Simply stated, it uses the 24 volt for positive, the 12 volt positive for the negative. IOW, the...

Capability vs. Vulnerability & Sophistication vs. Complexity

Keeping the CUCV KISS is admirable, yet there are some things I must have. Anyone with a 1010 or 1031 needs a rear view camera. They aren't expensive or complex, there is even a wireless one although that might need a battery. On the 1031, you could hide a good battery pack in the rear...

    Another leaking hydraulic head

If you must pull the hydraulic head, turn the engine over by putting the transmission in 5th gear with transfer case in neutral. Use a pry bar though the yoke on the universal joint between the transmission and transfer case. A 3/4" round bar, 2' long is all you need.

    Another leaking hydraulic head

The function of the delivery valve is a check valve in the system, I doubt a thin copper washer would reduce spring force enough to matter. Worth a try.

    Another leaking hydraulic head

The hydraulic head swap isn't needed unless there is a crack in the head itself. Finding this would require careful inspection with magnification. The pictures you posted don't show detail enough to rule this out. Also, a new cap screw would help. You could try some dry moly spray on the...

    Starting 3-ph motors w/003A

Variable resistor 3 labeled R3 adjusts the relay circuit which trips the main breaker CB1. Adjustment is covered in the -34 manual. A 5 hp compressor on 240 volts should not trip CB1 on a MEP 003a. That is less than 20 amps running, the generator will drive 50+ amperes constant...

    Starting 3-ph motors w/003A

The breakers on the 002/003a units are adjustable. It is possible some units may be out of adjustment. Breakers protect wiring from shorts, an 003 should be able to start an unloaded 10 hp three phase motor without tripping breakers. Most tools start unloaded, even air compressors. Air...

    mep-002a and welding

Not an issue at all. I've run my Miller Dynasty 200 DX on 200 amps output burning 3/16" E6013 rods off my 002a. Sails right through it, even though that is 8.1 kW draw. You can run a 225 Lincoln all the way with an 002a, seeing how a 3/16" rod only lasts about 30 seconds at 225 amperes. You...

    Starting 3-ph motors w/003A

Easily. Inrush is the response to inertia, the 003a has a huge rotor permanently coupled to that 140 cubic inch Onan diesel. There are two huge flywheels on this engine, all of which will power through the inrush. As long as the equipment powered by the motors isn't loaded!! The only issue...

Bringing the M1031 into 21st century...backup cam and cupholders

Fixed the electrical noise problem and the over-volt condition with a 4 ohm, 130 microhenry coil I made with 100 turns of 32 gauge magnet wire wound around a 3/4" x 3/4" tube form. There is still some screen distortion at idle but no noise. Guess it is a bit of voltage depression, pulling 20...

    Sudden shut down

Start at batteries and measure voltages all the way down. Sounds like a fusible link opened, you need to find the root cause before replacing it.

    price on used 6.2 heads

Inflation by demand. These vehicles have become popular, Ebay is a good source for the market price although it probably is a bit inflated.

    Finding the big sockets

What ever you do, don't use the motor pool idiot method, that is using a cold chisel to knock it loose. If the nuts on your axles have chisel gouges, look out for other shade tree mechanic shortcuts. And you might have to do some repairs to get the PROPER socket on the nut.

Best method to clean grease/dirt from engine and trany/transfer

Oven cleaner can be hard on aluminum and can damage paint. I've gelled paint thinner with soap chips, then brushed it on greasy parts. Soap chips? Get Ivory bar soap, when the wife isn't looking, run it through the Kitchen Aid fine cheese grater. Let these chips dry for a few days until they...

Bringing the M1031 into 21st century...backup cam and cupholders

No air conditioning at traffic lights. Yes, I pondered that. Far better to drive it electrically because the compressor will run at constant speed. In automotive systems driven off the crank, the change in performance from idle to cruise engine speeds can be great.

Bringing the M1031 into 21st century...backup cam and cupholders

FINALLY got the electrical system installed:mrgreen:. But I'm having issues with over-voltage, about 14.6 which is causing the video to drop out. Also, the picture quality is poor while running. So I used a 12 volt SLA battery to power it, this restored the quality and no drop out. So...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

The rear view camera seems to have an issue with voltage, I'm measuring 14.65 at the camera...so I use a 8 A-H sealed lead acid I have handy and the camera works GREAT. I have to check the alternator output, check the filtering capacitors and possibly, install an electrical noise filter on the...

    Finding the big sockets

Remember, it is an octagon. Not an 8 point double square but octagon. I bet you got a hexagon, the most common nut size.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

FINALLY got my high side 12 volt wiring system done. This will power 12 volt loads WITH TWO WIRES!!! Hot to ground is 24 volts, hot to 12 volts is 12 volts. Slick setup, the 24 volt side is through a solenoid relay so the ignition switch also switches this system. With that done, the rear...
