Well better late than never, and inspired by our "apprentices" (today) fixed the pump and roll solonoids switching and wiring on the M45 530C fire truck, fixed a quad..and finaly also fixed and fired up the 1942 willys jeep just so I could post this requested video. It is a real buzz to drive...
Ok, here's where initiative comes in. (yours). Personally if I wanted to try those out. I would (simply) replace one at a time as the connectors may be just "pull two out, push two in) and if not, I would cut the wires find plugs to fit the clocks, splice wire to plug and give it a try...
In my 5ton M54A2I have similar material all over (the cab floor sides and roof) and under (the hood) and like the driving experience better. I can still hear the whistle and the engine noises (for problems). just a whole lot quieter.
Simple truck simple solution. Number one plug out. (front one) Turn engine with starting handle with finger/thumb covering the hole when you feel the air pushing OUT against your pressure, Insert Wire rod down hole and turn engine SLOW on the starting handle. To "feel for the piston coming up to...

Ok, a sorry saga. However, you should now prepare to obtain "something!" to fit..that Jump cable. Taking that decision is a first step, as then confidence security and satisfaction will steadily follow. You already mentioned being fortunate in the job sector..fortunate indeed in these times, so...
That does sound like an earthing problem. (grounding). I alleays use a "hot" wire straight from a battery positive (+) and with the sharp probe at the other end poke the wiers at various points (enroute) to see if light come up bright, or it that lamp goes out on low beam. Same goes for earthing...
I had one that was not quite so kinked as that one, and leveled it out ok with a softish wooden taper as a drift. If it is a bunch of work or time limit. you could allways fill it in and smooth it with a good "metel mender" filler. My 1/2 penne'th
