Given that we are going into winter soon I will see what changes colder weather have before making any adjustment, it was 92 degrees on Saturday when I compared it to the digital meters (I had noticed this in the past, just don't remember how far off the meter was).

I am having a problem with the frequency meter on my MEP-016b, it reads higher than the actual frequency by about a 1/2 hz (when compared to measurement by my Fluke 87V and Kill-a-watt). Before digging into things too much, my first thought was possible added resistance due to old dirty...
As others have said, do the math then you will know what you need, I also think a 5KW MEP-002 or 10 KW MEP-003 may be good choices , but keep your mind open to some of the better civilian models like the Onan DJB and DJC (same basic engine block as the above mentioned MEP generators). Like...
So Doghead, does this count as a useful post?
Based on the style I guess it might be off of a 15+KW MEP series generator (MEP-004 -MEP-007), or possibly a 1960's /1970's Air Force MB series generator. I doubt it is much older than that since it has a needle style frequency meter not a...
For some reason they used the same data plate interchangably on the 60 Hz 15KW MEP-004 and on its 400 Hz cousin powered by the same engine (Maybe MEP-113a?) These generators are set up to produce 3 phase power only either high wye or low wye using a reconnection board. It is possible to rewire...
If you are looking for a cheap way to measure frequency, look at the basic Kill-A-Watt, they do surprisingly well with generators (many lower end multimeters will give crazy false frequency readings due to distorted wave form and noise from generators).

Your welcome, you may get more replies if you start a new message thread with the MEP-016E model name in it since the MEP-016B has a mechanical fuel pump and mechanical governor (not electronic).

On the frequency meter topic, if your looking for functional cheap replacement, Hardy Diesel sells a digital LED volts/hertz meter on ebay for about $20 (they do not advertise it on their regular web page). I have one, it seems to work fairly good, except the LED display is a bit dim in direct...
It sounds like you have a charging system problem, either in the DC voltage regulator or the alternator itself, my guess is the DC regulator. It looks like it is putting out some voltage, enough to keep it running, but not enough to charge the battery fully. If the parts to fix it right are...
One note on the front end loader option, most are not good at gentle movement, so be careful of the generator swinging and causing damage to the truck bed, etc.

If you get into dealing with replacement injection pump, be aware of the requirement for a matching size button, many people here have been burned by buying a replacement pump and not knowing they needed a to be matched to a certain size button that is not included (search the forum).

You don't have a MEP-016B, you have a MEP-016E which is a MEP-016B that has been refitted with a Yanmar 1 cylinder (L100?) diesel, someone just neglected to update the data plate on yours.

I have moved up to a 30KW generator without the use of any heavy equipment using just a 5x7 utility trailer and hand tools, the nice thing about this is they are close to the ground compared the back of a pick up truck (which I have also used to move my MEP-701a). Simply use a car jack, some...
I suspect they can be, probably just different generations of the same part. I say this based on the fact they both use the same injection pump (just 2 ports are capped off on the MEP-002) so operating pressure should be the same, and they are on the same engine family with the same number of...
Before getting too far into things you may want to confirm the frequency with an external meter, the meter on these units is just a display gauge, the actual measurement is done by a transducer inside the cabinet that just tells the gauge a relative needle position through low level output...
The only way would to be to change out the generator end, and probably some of the stuff in the control box. Not cheap, but basically what he bought was an engine attached to a big paperweight. He is not the first, we get people on here fairly often that have bought these 400 hz generators...
The MEP-021c is a 400 hz of the MEP-016c generator used to power radars and missile systems, it is nearly useless for most civilian needs, as you can not power anything dependant on 60 hz power (motors, or anything with switch mode power supplies or transformers), it is only useful in powering...
The MEP-021D is the 400 hz version of the MEP-016D which is a gasoline powered MEP-016A or C which has been repowered with Yanmar 1 cylinder diesel. As of the last time I checked the manuals for the D revision have not been released, however you should be able to get the manuals for the...
Ok, I just measured the sound level on my MEP-701a using a cheap made in China digital sound level meter. In peak reading A mode at 3 meters I get about 90dB (fluctuates between 89-91), in averaging C mode I get 80 dB. Readings were with no load from the front of the unit, positioning allow...
