Since I started this message thread over a year ago I have seen the prices on MEP-002 and MEP-003 generators on GL in my area just continue to rise. It is now rare to find an intact looking MEP-002 on GL in my area sell below about $800 and MEP-003's seem to run about $1,500 with occasional...
The electric transfer pump should also only run if the run switch is in the Aux Run position, not the standard Run position for onboard fuel tank only use.
Ike
I am not sure about the Yanmar conversions, but the Onan powered MEP-016B has a mechanical fuel pump to feed the engine from the onboard tank, and a 24V Facet Purolator Gold-Flo series pump with a military fitting on it for the transfer pump that refills the onboard tank from an external fuel...
try ebay, they often have odd size airpax, etc. breakers for relatively low prices.
Ike
p.s. try searching on klixon breaker on ebay I spot a couple of 7.5 amp push/pull ones.
It is not designed to jump start, it is designed to charge the battery of a truck that is ran down, during cranking the starter probably draws several hundred amps. Think of it as a heavy duty gasoline powered battery charger, not another truck there to jump start from. Think of a motor pool...
Your MEP-026 outputs about 100 amps at 28V, as a general rule of thumb you should never try to charge a battery during bulk charging faster than about 1/5 of its capacity per hour. An 8D large truck battery is rated around 250AH at 12V, this means your MEP-026 should be able to charge 4 of...
Water in an engine does not mean the end of the world, depending on your planned use, etc. I bought a commercial John Deere diesel powered skid mounted Kohler generator off GL a few years ago the externally mounted muffler had been removed and the exhaust manifold had been covered with a trash...
Don't take it too personally, it is just every couple of weeks or so we seem to end up with a new MEP generator owner in here that has killed his new to him, most likely working generator by either idling it and killing the AVR output transistors or damaging the control/charging circuit by...
The problem is the original question is sort of vague, sort of like asking what is the best kind of car to use for the commute to work?
Having said that it is hard to beat a MEP-002 or MEP-003 in that size (output) range, however they are big, heavy, and loud.
Ike
I am considering bidding on a couple of trailer mounted generators which appear to have low tires in the photos, I was wondering if anyone knows what size wheels / bolt pattern the following trailers use, so I could see if I have the right size laying around to use for potential pick up, as this...
Treeguy I can see your point on this one, but I also suspect the average non professional diesel mechanic is likely to do as much harm as good pulling off the injection pump to check the drive washer. If there is a problem it is a fairly good chance the injection pump should be rebuilt and the...
I don't have a MEP-003, (I have a MEP-701a along with other generators) I think most people on here are using common group 59 batteries wired in series to get 24V, in reality just about any pair of 12V automotive batteries wired in series to get 24 volt will work. (you always want matched pairs...
Diesel is safe to store indoors, fumes can be an issue in an occupied structure though. If you go with a tank that large add extra filtration to clear out the stuff (water, stuff that grows in water, etc) that will build up as the fuel gets old. For long term storage the best way to keep...
You did not ask for it, but the most likely failures to result the problem your describing are bad rotating rectifier diodes on the end of the rotor, or bad automatic voltage regulator. If it is the votlage regulator there are schematics in the tech manual, several people have replaced them...
Peter you do have a point, but it can't hurt to try and see if it works at this point, it just depends on the details of the failure now that the ends are also isolated..
Your safe output will be reduced to 2/3 of the rating since your using 2/3 of the windings, in reality the rating is reduced...
Yes, check your data plates, if a motor is marked 208-230V your ok, it is marked 230V it may over heat, however you may get away with it by turning up the voltage some to around 126/228V or a little less, the general spec is +/- 10% allowed for voltage with a nominal of 115V on the low side...
A few follow up points
The NEC requirement for the generator to be able to carry the full size load when using whole house automatic transfer switch is relatively new (I think NEC version for 2009), not all states have adopted the new code yet, many are still on the 2005 or 2006 code.
The 200...
