Sounds completely normal. These aren't like modern diesles that like to work down at 12 to 1500 RPM, they like 2000 and above. They smoke, nuttin' you can do about that. If you take into consideration the year the Multi ws made..1980 ish...it is WAY cleaner than the Cat, Cummins, Mack, DD, etc...

Rinse 'till it runs clean then throw a few bottles of alcohol...the rubbing kind 8-)...into the drum, dump it out and you should be good to go. The alcohol will blend with the water and help remove it.
