In addition to always keeping a Soneil battery minder attached, the A3 also has a Solargizer that was installed by the Army. Unfortunately, where I live is highly wooded and the shade precludes much sunlight reaching the Solargizer where I keep the truck parked. We should get together sometime...
I was convinced that I had a bad starter on my M35A3. The truck had always started very reliably and very quick. The last time I went to start it, the engine turned over about two revolutions and I heard a loud mechanically-sounding thump. The starter wouldn't turn over anymore, but you could...
As Floridianson mentioned, it is quite common for the drain petcock to get plugged up. Open the petcock and use a piece of welding rod to clean it out. I occasionally open the petcock while the engine is running. The pressure and volume flush it out. Only takes a second or two.
When my A2 transmission gave out, the gears were so trashed I didn't even consider rebuilding it. I got a takeout and swapped the transmission. I went ahead and replaced the clutch at the same time. I'm still running on the used transmission. Good luck.
When I got my MEP003A, the tank was a real mess. There was orange sludge about two inches deep in the bottom and extensive rust in the tank. It was difficult to clean because of the baffle. I removed the tank and cleaned it as best as I could. I then put in a couple of handfuls of crushed...
You may want to check and see if the engine will turn over by hand, but only after putting oil in the cylinders and letting it soak. It is likely the fuel tank will be rusted out after sitting so long. If you can get that jeep for a good price, I would definitely go for it.
I understand that the reason for the demil is that people unfamiliar with the steering characteristics were having a lot of accidents. I also heard that a lady in New York sued the military when her husband killed himself in a goat accident while off-roading. When I was in the army back in 71...
My 003A linkage doesn't bounce around. My original frequency gauge is steady as a rock after about 5 minutes and will hold 60 Hz for many hours without adjusting RPM. Has anyone warned you that you should never change the engine speed to idle? Shut down all 002A and 003A generators at full...
Please refer to the attached document, put out by Allison and which covers the 1545 transmission. It lists fluids authorized for the transmission. Dexron III covers a larger range of operating temperatures. Another thought is how many 1545 transmissions have been produced, and most are in...
I switched to Dexron III several years ago. What a difference! Shifts up and down much smoother. I didn't contact an Allison dealer, I contacted Allison directly and talked with an engineer in their Technical Support Dept. I had a difficult time getting to one of their engineers since they...
I've put thousands of miles on both my M35A2 and my M35A3, both on road and many miles off-road in poor terrain. I've never had a boot fail. The boots on my trucks are what were on them from the Army. IMO you should be looking for boots that last a lot more than 1000 miles or one year.
I'm a firm believer in using 6TLs. I've got two deuces with 6TLs installed. I never have a problem. One of the deuces still has the original 6TLs that came from the Army. They are now approaching 10 years age based on the date codes on the batteries and they appear to be as strong as ever...
If you search on Google, you'll find several sources for copper crush washers of all sizes. As other have stated, once they are used, they should be replaced with new crush washers.
When you first try to start it, let the starter turn the engine over a few revolutions before starting it. You can sometimes find poor connections by feeling for hot connections. I had a somewhat similar issue years ago and I ended up melting the post off of the top of the battery. I would...
Just because the connections feel tight doesn't mean that the connections are good. Disconnect the battery cables and clean all of the posts and connectors. Make sure the cells are topped off to the correct level with de-ionized water. If you don't have a 24 V charger, you can charge each 12...
