Doh, hmm from all this idling and playing with everything....I just noticed I have fresh oil dripping on my starter. Wonder if it's coming from the turbo...probably. Verified it is indeed oil. I was hoping it was just water washing some soot and carbon down onto the starter. It appears it is...
WHEW and .......I'll explain.
I went up to Harbor Freight tools to buy one of those laser temp guns. Wow, incredible little toy. Found myself checking the temp of everything around me...anyways back to the topic. Went out to the truck, said a little prayer that the culprit would be found...
I re-used what was left of the gasket. I used silicone caulking from HD to do the job. I don't remember what silicone it was but it was the most expensive stuff they had. So far so good, no leaks. Which doesn't mean much anywhere but this is in WA state where it rains all the time.
Well, today I went out and retested the coolant system. Seems the unplugged radiator tube didn't help. I'm really scratching my head now. When the temp gauge showed 240 degrees I took the small 3/4" plug on the thermostat housing off. Hmmm, doesn't look like it opened. Now I'm really thinking...
Just got in from unclotting the radiator overflow tube. In fact I stuck a small drill bit in there and turned it by hand. Lookes like the clot took up about 3 inches of the tube. Once I freed everything up, I shot some brake cleaner in there to make sure. Sure enough she's cleared up. Will test...
Hi Gimpy, I did the test during idling only. I didn't take the truck out on the road. But yes the temp stayed at 155 with the thermostat out and the radiator cap off using just plain water. Any input on the plugged radiator overflow tube? Does that make a difference? I'm headed outside...
Hey Eric, yes I found out that the overflow tube is indeed plugged. In fact I tried stuffing a pipecleaner in the tube. It only made it in 1/2 inch. What was one the of the pipecleaner was some black crud.
Tonight I did another test run.
I put the garden hose in the radiator with the...
When I had the hoses and belts off, the water pump turns freely. In fact I did verify everything was turning by looking down one of the holes. I'm thinking it could be an air pocket, faulty thermostat, or a plugged radiator. Tonight, I'll pull the thermostat and run the system again to see what...
I actually put 3 bottles of super flush in the system w/out thermostat. I ran it for about an hour or so. Didn't notice any globs of crap coming out when I rinsed the system out. The wierd thing is the intial cold water that came out of the radiator when the engine water temp gauge read about...
Hello gentlemen. A couple weeks ago I took my M109A3 out on the road. I was a mere 3 miles from the house and noticed the temp gauge was pegged (240 degrees +). I drove her home and cooled her down. The temp was hovering around 160 after 2 hours of cooling. I was thinking it was a closed...
Deuces hardly show in MT. In fact hardly anything shows up on MT GL to tell you the truth. You do in fact need to be a US citizen to bid on GL. Anyone who won a deuce via GL cannot sell their NOW private vehicle to anyone other than a US citizen. As mentioned above, best to buy from a dealer...
Today my task was to tackle the cooling system issues. Last week when I attempted my maiden voyage, my temp gauge was pegged. I limped her home and waited until today to work on her. One task lead to another task which lead to another. I flushed the cooling system today. It took approx 4 hours...
Hi Scott, no I'm working on the coolant systems in 3/4 trucks. I'm going to flush the system. Replace all the radiator and heater hoses, add coolant filters, and replace the thermostats. This among other things.
Hi Dave, I hear you on the lack of time. In fact, I'm taking an extra week of vacation to concentrate my efforts to get much needed projects done on the trucks. With this so-called record breaking nasty winter around the corner, I want to make sure the motorpool is good to go.
