To do it properly, you need to replace the crush sleeve and reset pinion preload.
This requires a fixture to hold the pinion yoke, a very long bar for leverage on your pinion nut ratchet, and an inch pound torque wrench.
Or you can just zip the pinion nut back on blind.
Just don't over torque...
I found kits on ebay that include the entire tire rod with a new tie rod end on the left and adjustable on the right.
About $125.
Either that or hit the wrecking yard.
Found this.
Actually never realized they made that middle version.
Been lucky that mine have never worn out.
Now, how do you fix it?
Can that left tie rod be replaced?
Good advice.
I wired a manual switch also but keep the card in operation.
When I lost all my glow plugs (bad resistor) my card went into protection mode where it clicked the gp light and solenoid on and off.
Removal of the temp sensor will make the light stay on longer but also the glow plugs...
It is sad that just a few months back, military trucks driven by private citizens were hailed as heroes.
Anybody remember that?
Come to Wyoming.
At least out here in the sticks, you can still register a half track.
Correction; we don't really have sticks..
Out here in the sage brush, you can...
Two of my bad 60g's swelled up enough to need channel lock plier extraction.
Ditch that resistor.
Just make a wire with ring connectors; 8 inches in length.
Connect from gp sol to 12v terminal.
Disconnect the resistor bank at the 24v bus.
Done.
Don't wait.
Mine was already converted but i...
My spare set of AC60G's measure .8 to .9 ohms each.
Your duratherms should be in that range as well since the whole system is built to supply about 12 amps per glow plug.
12 volts/1 ohm= 12 amps
12 amps x 8 plugs =96 amps.
So you whole gp system can pull about 100 amps during glow operation...
The 12 volt ignition switch sends 12 volts to the coil of the relay under the dash.
That relay sends 24 volts to the solenoid on the starter.
The solenoid applies 24 volts to the starter windings.
So you actually have a key switch, a relay, a solenoid, and a starter motor in the system with 12...
P=I*V
So 85 watts=12 volts x 7 amps
105 watts= 12 volts x 8.75 amps.
I am guessing that is per led headlight so 14 amps on low beam for the pair.
I wonder if those wattage figures are an "equivalent to incandescent" or actual wattage?
Neat lights.
I do dig me a fine set of them them Light...
What resistance do you measure across the coil?
About 4 ohms would be right.
Is it open or shorted?
Those copper contactors look barely worn.
Either the plunger seized up and couldn't close the contacts or the coil shorted out or has lost continuity altogether.
Nice work.
Now the power to that wire originates in the ignition switch circuitry.
So that, when the key is in the run position, 12 volts is fed to the gen light(s) and then to the excite wire #2 on the alternators flat plug.
With the key in run but engine stopped, the gen light illuminates...
That is one thing I won't be doing; replacing the motor.
I dig the 6.2.
Already have a K5 with a 400 small block.
Sure power is fun.
But wheeling at low speed with the diesel burbling along.. priceless.
Also, my gas k5 gets 10 mpg dowhill with a tail wind.. even in perfect tune.
My m1009 gets 17...
Different where i live.
No triple A out here.
Even if you can get a tow truck, it took 4 hours the last time someone punctured their oil pan.
As for bringing diesel, my tank holds 26 gallons.
Never come close to empty.
