You'll find that you don't use 1st gear that much. It's a granny gear and most time you can get the 151 rolling from a stop in second gear. Think of it as a 3 speed with a granny gear. Now you just need things like lights, gauges, seats and a top... :)
You can make the canvas rails easily. It's just 16 gauge metal. Get a length of metal and bend it around a steel rod. I think it's like a 3/8 inch. Then cut to length and weld. I did it many years ago it took me maybe 8 hours from start to finish.
Well besides going through and making sure all the brakes are working and tightening up the steering and fixing the fuel tank...and maybe updating the brake lights the big question is do you leave it as is or do you get the grinder out and see about taking the civy top off and putting it back to...
You can use any tach/dwell meter out there. You need to have the adapters to hook up to the waterproof ignition. If it is a 12v one just hook up to one of the batteries. I did that for years before I got a GI one.
PS Magazine is a way for the Army to put out information on maintenance on vehicles and equipment that isn't in the manuals or to implement ideas that GIs come up with to a problem. They are full of good information including Modifications that were issued for a truck. Good reads.
I believe in the KISS method of trouble shooting (Keep It Simple Smiley). Check the tires first. If you can get new rubber for them that would be the best. If not then try swapping as mentioned before. If it is tires then get new rubber and drive on. If that doesn't fix it then try the other...
Yes 2WD on the transmission so the set up you have will work fine. You could change the NP200 transfer case to an NP205 which would help with your road speed and heating problems that the 200 has.
Drive it? Figure it would take about 8 hours from one end of the state to the other. If you wanted to stay off the highway you could take US 42 which will go right up by the IX Center. Back in the 50s that's how my folks got from Cleveland to GA was on US 42. But seriously if you want it...
Looks like a nice truck to start with. Since you made a killer deal for the Isuzu diesel. Go with that. I believe the Isuzu doesn't have electronics on it so it would be good for what you want. The cost of the kits to convert to disk brakes it would be cheaper to swap axles and you would get...
That part number worked great for me. I needed the nut and washer for my power steering setup (which are taken from late 70 dodge) and I went to Rockauto and searched that part and ordered the nut and washer and it works perfect on my setup. Thanks for posting that!
Here is my idea (I just used MS Paint to crate this). I took your drawing and shorten the trailer bed to fit the stock frame and lengthen the front fender like I suggested. That's a cool looking truck IMHO. Just a thought and adding food for thought.
Recently restored could mean a lot of different things. I could mean the previous owner thew a fresh coat of paint on it and said "it's restored" or they may have taken everything apart and rebuilt everything from the ground up. Both are considered "restored". From your description it sounds...
Interesting idea. Yes you will definitely have to lengthen the frame to use the stock M101 trailer. Or you could shorten the trailer to fit the stock frame. Which might look more "normal".
Bob try doing a google search for Dorman #675-048 and see if anything pops up. Someone might cross reference it. Or if you have a shop near you that does leaf springs and hardware they might be able to make the stud for you.
Interesting build. I'm wondering what you are going to use for the transfercase? Since you are putting a 10 speed transmission in I'm assuming your low range will be the lower gears?
When ever I have painted either of the cammo patterns both the 4 color and the 3 color I've just eyeballed the pattern and sprayed. Yes start with the base color green and then add the browns and blacks etc on top.
