Actually, it was quite common on the home-built electric cars of the 70's. THey generally only used 2 of the gears, however, since the torque band on an electric motor is far wider than on a gas engine.

OK. I misunderstood when you said "I’ve searched for the relay that came with the truck". You weren't talking about the original truck.

I thought the starter on an M37 was activated directly by the foot switch, with no relay involved?

I considered one of those, but the ball was far to high off the ground for use with any of my trailers. (I have Michelin 11.00R16 tires on the truck, which accounts for some of the height, but even with stock tires, the pintle hitch is still too high.)
