Considerations:
Originally, I put 16.00x20 tires on goodyear rims on the truck. Engine redline of 2100RPM occurred at 62MPH. The speed was satisafctory but the very large tires, in my sole opinion, made the truck unpleasant to operate on-road.
16.00x20 tires raised the vehicle 5...
Here are pictures.. The result is 1800RPM at 60MPH. which is perfect. The job is not the prettiest but it seems solid and as soon as I change the engine oil I am going to do some more driving.
The NHC250 will be short on power for that. It is pretty much 'all in' with the T-case. A Cummins big-cam would.. but I'd be scared to run that fast.
Pictures are here:

The hardest item was...
Lately, at least one major truck refurbisher has been taking the T-1138 cases out of 939 type trucks and retrofitting the 800-type T-138 case into them. This results in a much lower speed but also higher off-road reliability, especially in low reverse behind the Allison, for trucks being shipped...
A moderator here is likely to remove insulting posts and occasionally users who are so unpleasant as to make them.
To gain more room in the M818, I removed the bench seat, moved the air-ride to the passenget (let them bounce all over the place!) and put an M35 seat in the driver position. It...
After the transfer case upgrade, we got a bunch of greasy hand prints on the CARC. Do we just pressure wash it off at the 50 cent car wash or is there something else to clean with since it is CARC?
The trans-transfer intershaft was redone with a special end worked out by a machinist. Pictures would be best. The yoke on the 900 transfer case T-1138 was much larger than the yoke on the original shaft. the 800 series with the T-138 case have smaller yokes there.
I would rather encourage this...
I found a 20 year old, contract-maintained, 40KW Mankato enclosed set with 125 hours on it where a company was moving, ditching the mainframe and going to PC-size servers, and was not going to take the set. $4000 including the Zenith transfer switch. A steal. A tilt-bed got it home for me. I...
If you do order from PRC-68.com, you won't be disappointed. The pack should be the one with glass epoxy circuit board material, uses "D" cells, and should be usable in both 77 and 25 radios. I ran a '77 on ten "C" cells for over a day using several C holders from Radio Shack that I had cobbled...
I would also like to know what sizes and brands commercial rims (and tire sizes) fit dual on a, 800 series 5 ton.
Likely candidates are semi tractor steer tires on the front which were extremely satisfactory in the past for an M35, and same quality drive tires on the rears. Then it may be...
Today as a matter of fact...
4th seems like the old 5th.
60MPH was as expected 1800RPM.
City streets at 30-45 are pleasant in 4th.
5th is great on open road as we have in Texas.
There is slowing down to about 45 on inclines but I did not have to downshift.
I have no objection to doing so if...
Having put >2k highway miles on an air assist, air-o-matic, I would agree that a hydro version of that would be a good choice if you do not want air for wahtever reason (I was completely satisifed with air). More of a pain to install due to needing a pump.
OK, what lube goes in the transfer case of the M939 series? This is the T-1138 transfer case. The TM copy is not clear on that.
Does this require the MT-1 rated lube like the M35 and M818?
(the lube that does not attack yellow metal)
In that case, GL1 or GL5/MT-1 should do.
The case is in. It is narrower than the original, physically a bit smaller but that should not be an issue if it can push a 939 it can push an 818. Brackets had to be made to mount it up, and at this point the shift linkage has been done. The parking brake is being worked on now. It is on the...
I have thought about that. The engine I got seems to have pretty flat torque from 1500 up. I could be wrong, have not seen a torque curve on the NC250 engine.
I don't think 1500 could be considered 'lugging', and for sure there is that awful 3-4 hole to consider where the pickup will be about...
with such things being unfortunately scrapped, I hope someone will be able to save the fun stuff like the engines, trans, axles and springs, etc. No doubt a 4-wheel fanatic would buy the axles and transfers, etc. The more drivetrains we save from the scrapper and sell to offroaders, the less...
Making one up is always a fun little job. I always solder the connections once they are clamped in. I realize it might then be impossible to easily remove, but a soldered connection won't fail under fire.
The time has come! Monday AM I take the beast over to Tidwell and we start the job of swapping the T-case!
Tom, I had looked at a 6000 spicer with the 0.66. This was also discussed with Mr. Tidwell over at Tidwell transmissions. (they do custom mods and such to 18-wheeler tractors so nothing...
