Just make sure you have the correct brace for the starter you get. They are different for the two types. direct drive and gear reduction.

This is a real shot in the dark. Would the pump exhibit these symptoms if run backwords? I suspect it wouldn't even work, but I don't know. The reason I bring this up is because the op mentioned a serpentine belt which are not used on CUCV's.
