    longda M1009 Build Thread

Welcome to the Military Vehicle Addiction Support Network, I mean Steel Soldiers. Looks like a pretty good pick. Other than the other CUCV-specific stuff, keep an eye on the axles. The 10-bolts in the 1009's seem to like to go "bang." Whenever I get my alignments done, I go down to Firestone...

    wipers... will not return

Can you run 18" blades with the size of the window? Maybe it just the way my wiper arms sit, but mine had 15" blades on it when I got it. I figured I could run a little bit bigger blade so I moved up to a 16" when I replaced them. I really can't tell any difference in speed. I think if I was to...

    GP Controller normal operation?

OK, thanks guys. The entire electrical system is stock other than the stuff I've fixed (which has been a lot) or the small stuff I've added (pretty much just a cigarette lighter off an open 12V plug in the fusebox and license plate lights spliced into the running lights) Any recommendations on...

    Voltage drop at speed

OK, I just found the troubleshooting instructions in the CUCV FAQ thread. With key off, everything's looking fine. Like I said, front battery's low, but I was getting 11.7 volts on the red wire for the alt and the red wire on the plug. With key on, the voltage dropped almost a full volt to 10.9...

    wipers... will not return

I've noticed something like this on mine. When I want washers I push the little tab forward and pull it back to shut them off. Also trips the wipers at the same time (which is probably how its supposed to work), I just shut them off after the washers.

    Voltage drop at speed

I've been having this issue too and I know what you're talking about. The GP relay seems to be going back and forth a bit more than it should/used to. I've got a new GP relay coming in this week since I cracked the housing trying to get the contacts off  but once the truck gets running it...

best way to add a 12 volt winch?

Daddy likes the looks of that! :D Before I assume and make. . . well you know, how's the winch mounted on there? I'm guessing some pretty good sized grade 8 bolts?

    Voltage drop at speed

It seems I've been having this issue for a while, it wasn't until recently and the purchase of a voltmeter that I've noticed its an issue. Long story short, no matter what I do, GEN1 doesn't seem to want to charge the front battery at speed. At idle, the truck will usually put out...

best way to add a 12 volt winch?

If you make a mount, post some pics. I've been debating the best way to go about mounting a winch on the truck (first I gotta sort out the electrical issues. Yay, CUCV's) I'm thinking about cutting out the bottom middle bar on the brush guard and either bolting or welding the winch mount in...

    GP Controller normal operation?

Wouldn't suprise me if its the batteries. GEN 1 has gone bad (again) and is slowly draining my front battery. And yes, I've already tried checking for shorts and I spent most of yesterday spraying down every electrical connection I could find and get my hands on with electrical cleaner.

best way to add a 12 volt winch?

:ditto: There's some batteries out there (I.E. Optimas) that have side posts for wiring up additional accessories as well as the normal top posts. Just make sure you put a fuse into the positive side of the circuit and you should be good.

    GP Controller normal operation?

Could be worth a shot. When I was first trying to diagnose the problem, I noticed a blue and white sticker by the GP relay that said something to the effect of "Do not bypass this relay with a jumper. Glow plug damage may result." Not sure if it would be the same thing with the GP controller or not.

    GP Controller normal operation?

As if I didn't have enough electrical issures to deal with. . . not sure if this is normal or not. Any help would be appreciated. When I go to start the truck up, I can hear the GP relay energizing and clicking (and according to the voltmeter, sucking a lot of juice while its doing it.) It'll...

    M1009 no lights at all

http://www.jatonkam35s.com/CUCVTechnicalmanuals/tm9-2320-289-20.pdf Page F-15 and F-16. Sounds like it might be time to get a voltmeter and start tracing stuff. Could also be a dirty or loose contact.

    Storm Chasing

Uh, are those handlebars off of a kids bike? I can't help but get this weird mental picture of some border patrol officer sitting back there with the little pom-pom things on the end of the handlebars. I might also have to fab up a set of mesh covers like the ones in the first pics for when...

    CUCV 2 again

If your truck's straight OD green like mine, I'd just tell her I was gonna get rid of the current truck. Then I'd buy the new one. Then I'd just park the old one on the lawn. . . rofl

Looking for a new engine. Any ideas?

I think Boyce Equipment used to have used CUCV 6.2 diesels for around $950 minus alts and what-not. Looks like Eastern Surplus has some CUCV 6.2's. No idea on price, you'll have to call. Try to stay away from the Hummer 6.2's if you can. Same basic rotating assembly, but the oil pan, exhaust...

    Is this a good deal?

I'd take it. I had Firestone quote me somewhere in the neighborhood of $700-$900 to do a coolant flush and replace my shocks. I did the coolant flush for the price of a couple of gallons. Haven't gotten around to the shocks, but the price for the shocks themselves would be less than $200. All I...

    CUCV 2 again

Man, you Californians have all the fun stuff :( First time I saw one of the LSSV's with the new body style, the little voice inside my head started screaming "I want one!!!"

    Storm Chasing

700R4's are what they normally put behind the 6.2's back in the day. They're a 4 speed OD transmission. A lot of guys don't like them because they're not as strong as the TH400's that come stock in the CUCV's, but 4L60E's (which are basically electronically controlled versions of 700R4's)...
