If you coat both sides, the next time you pull the axle you might not damage the gasket and possibly be able to use it again. Wipe off any grease that squeezes out for a nice tidy job.
Mike, that looks like the female end of a regular M-series wire connector to me, not a capacitor. I would think there is a male wire connector that is supposed to plug in here, unless it was disconnected per a MWO.

Don't use speaker wire. It will not stand up well to the heat in the engine compartment.
There is a type of wire insulation that is resistant to gasoline etc., but if your wires are out of the way of the fuel system, this should not be a concern.

That steering column picture is scary. Even if you stay with manual steering, I would replace the entire column and the steering box. You sure don't want any part of the steering failing a few years down the road.

A friend of mine put an air ride seat in his M818. The only problem we had was that the seat was too high and your thighs rubbed on the steering wheel at times.
