I live at the base of some impressive mountain grades. I like using 5th low to climb the grades because I will usually make it to the top in that gear.
If I have to downshift further, 4th low is closer to 5th low than 2nd high is to 3rd high. In other words, if you're in 5th low and have to...
The reason for the fine threads is they are much less likely to loosen up given the vibration that goes along with a Diesel engine and off-road operation. Keep telling yourself this as you turn a nut 156 revolutions to unscrew it.
Except for the bed, the truck looks very complete. If you can get it for $500, I would say go for it. Plan on having it towed to your place, either on a trailer or with the driveshafts removed.
The bed is identical to an M35A2 and is readily available.
If you can locate a frame repair shop that works on large trucks, I would ask them what they recommend. The rivets are designed to stay tight for the life of the truck.
I had a friend who replaced some worn rivets with grade 8 bolts on his CUCV. He periodicaly had to re-tighten the bolts and...
A friend of mine just got a new 2011 Polaris 4X4 that he wants to try out . It looks like we will be out on Saturday for the day with this new toy and my Mule.
You used to be able to buy kits to convert full-time four wheel drive trucks to part time 4X4. This was expensive and a lot of work to get a one or two MPG improvement.
If you are real light on the gas pedal on flat ground with a tail wind, you might get 16 MPG.
Here's today's report from the Low Desert: Went out to Anza Borrego for the day, weather was fantastic. About 70 deg F, just a slight breeze and the rain stopped at the mountain crest and never made it to the desert floor.
There has been rain in the Low Dez as the Ocotillo has leaved out. We...
RE: the Snap test:
:shock:HOLY COW! Who pays for your engine if it greandes itself all over the test bay? What is the resoning behind this test, to prove that the governor will prevent a runaway?!?
I myself would leave the PROK too if not for my job, entire extended family and most of my...
Actually you are exempt for two reasons:
1. Your truck is older than a 1998 year model, and
2. Your GVWR is over 14,000 lbs.
I would suggest doing as Mr. Will says and register it historical, unless you need otherwise for a business purpose.
Nowhere, trying to concentrate on keeping my costs as low as possible and keeping a roof over my head.:(
Pinzgauer is non-op'd right now because I can't afford to register it.
The Mojave Desert is loaded with old mine shafts, tailing piles and other mining relics going back 100 years or more. The old shafts are particularly dangerous and every year someone gets too close and falls in, often with the quad or motorcycle they're riding.
I once got yanked off the dirt...
Old-school: My dad adds water soluble oil to the coolant on his GPW for water pump lubrication.
If you haven't added any oil, then like blood says, it's probably coming from somehwere.
Are you planning to put some sort of heat shield on thst stack? You wouldn't want some kid jumping in the bed of the truck and grabbing the stack while it is hot.
