    Rubbing compound worked wonders

I'm working on my M543A2 wrecker restoration. The interior was heavily oxidized and I was expecting to prep and paint. I bought the rubbing compound shown in the attached picture and gave it a try. It took several coats but after trying several methods, a tooth brush worked the best. The...

    M543A2 Wrecker seat reupholster

Tackled reupholstering the wrecker cab and crane cockpit seats. The crane control cockpit didn't have any cushions but I could make out the shape from stains on the paint. The cab had frames but needed reupholstery. I fabricated the seat bottoms from 3/4" plywood. Primed and painted. I...

    M818 recovery with M543A2

My friend, "five ton Larry", won an M818 from Barstow. Very nice truck but with a very large hole in the radiator (Thanks GL). Anyway, we used the M543A2 wrecker to recover the truck. It towed very nicely behind the wrecker. I think I hit 40 MPH on the flat stretches of road. No issues with...

will these 10 lug rims fit a 5 ton?

I'm looking at these tires and rims ( NSN 2530-01-570-6352 ). It says 395 85R 20 and 10 lug rims but I can't find the bolt pattern. I think they would be nice on my M543 wrecker...bigger than 11.00 x 20.00s, a bit smaller than 14.00 x 20.00. I've read on other posts that MRAP rims won't bolt...

Deuce recovery adds another to the fleet

Just won a nice deuce on GSA. The scoop is she sat in El Centro CA. for 27 yrs. She's a 1985 truck with 2365 miles. Checked all fluids, topped off and bled brakes, threw in some batteries and she fired up. Filled the tires and drove her home. Best of all, she came with an NOS canvas cab...

had the deuce in the parade today. weather was great and the deuce was a big hit. at the end of the parade, i was getting out to talk to the riders when my wedding ring hooked the troop seat. i was lucky it didn't tear my finger off. This gives me a good reason not to wear it. 10 stitches...

Score: Tree stump (1), mule (0)

Took the mule out for a spin last night with the wife. While flying thru the high grass, a tree stump jumped up and bit the front drive side completely off the mule.:cry::cry: The only thing holding the wheel and drop axle on was the tie rod. I popped off the tie rod, had the wife sit...

    M818 won't downshift

I took the truck for her first ride in 6 years. She upshifted just fine but downshifting to 4th would result in grinding. I can downshift to 3rd when she slows down enough. Again, upshifting is fine, oil levels good. Any ideas? BTW, transfer case was in high.

fabricated battery hold downs for 5 ton

I went with 2 8D batteries versus the standard 4 for the M818. I did a slight modification to the battery box. Cut off the 2 center knubs. I welded up these hold down brackets. You can use the standard hold down bolts as well. If there is interest, i can scan my sketch with dims for those...

    m818 14 x 20 spare tire mounting?

Searching around I see lots of us have mentioned wanting to mount a 14 x 20 or 16 x 20 spare on our M818s. I've seen a bunch of pics of M818s with large singles mounted and the spare tire carrier still has an 1100x20 in it. The 800 and 900 series w/super singles have a spare tire rack in...

    5 ton master cylinder question

I replaced my master cylinder Saturday. After removing the old one, I found this thingy (picture attached and I'm pointing at it) on the bottom of the unit. The new master cyllinder has the same port but it is plugged. There were no wires attached when I pulled it out but it does take wires...

    M818 air leak under dash

I found air leaking out the right side of the low air buzzer switch. There is a small hole on the right side of the switch where you can feel the air coming out. Is this a similiar problem as I've read on deuces? Some folks have posted how you can take them apart (watch out for the flying...
