Sorry, I can't provide input on the transfer case issue. However, I did want to say that I really like your CUCV bed, very cool design! It would be great to see more detailed pics of it, in a new thread.

That looks really good for a 35+ year old truck. The M880 series is getting long in the tooth, and most have cancer BAD. More pics of the outside of the truck, please!
The best headache rack I have ever seen on a deuce, is the one for the M756 pipeline deuce. They are hard to find anymore, most of the pipelines have been turned into Chinese toasters, and the few that are left are collector's items. But there are a couple who have made their own and modded...

While it's uncovered, now would be a good time to check the rear brakes, the gas tank sending unit, and the rear shocks, just to make sure they are 100%. If anything needs repairing or replacing in those areas, ain't no better time than when the bed is off and it's easy to get to. Just sayin.
Need to replace that driveshaft, with a dent that big, it is not long for this world. At the very least, replacing it will remove a harmonic imbalance that it is causing.
Also, now is a good time to grind off that stupid ball hitch and mount a real pintle one. If military vehicles were...
