This is where load management comes in to play. turn off the water heater and run the ac. when you need hot water, shut off the ac and turn on the water heater.
ac usually runs fairly low amperage, but the inrush on startup is what will get you
It depends how big you want to go. Simplest is an interlock backfeed kit. Its completely manual and the easiest to setup
Next up is a double throw disconnect, this requires some reworking of your feeder and must be sized to match your main feed.
Then theres an automatic transfer switch, this...
I repaired my A5, had a burnt trace.
Running with the battle short on will bypass the safeties (low oil hi temp etc) so its up to you if you want to run that risk. Before throwing parts at it I would try to find where you are loosing the circuit.
Run it hard, Run it hot, watch the ash and soot fall alot.
I have a 004 and i made a load bank out of 3 dryer element arrays, it can deliver 16500 watts of load (plus motor) and after every significant outage i run the bank for a bit (usually 1 to 2 hours) to blow the gunk out.
If it were me id make sure there was no oil pressure (low oil can also cause issues) controls wise oil or temperature can cause an unexpected shutdown. Both can be jumped for testing purposes.

Yes, my feed runs through my attic. As long as it is properly rated for the current and there is overcurrent protection rated for the wire at the generator side.
You can run unbalanced, it reduces fuel efficiency, its best to have some load on the unused leg (couple of flood lights or a...
my school of thought is use a 6 micron as the lead filter and the 2 micron for the lag filter. tgis way the 2 micron only catches particles small enough to pass the 6 . better filtering with less chance of clogging the first 2 micron
I have a 004a and completely automated it along with an ats.
Since you need to go with an interlock kit you could still rig the generator to be a pushbutton start and self regulate the frequency.
