When I made the M51A2 street legal, one of the high priority items was the light all around.
1) I had to install new front lights, because the originals were too far to the center relative to the side of the truck. This gives on-comers the impression that the car is smaller than it really is...
Thanks for the warning.
I am now in this process, see the last three posts of this thread. Still did not get the Pittman arm off. However, the box is finally free (loosened the drag link instead) and will be going to inspect the gear once we have it inside the shop very carefully.
Below a...
Next step done.
We did not manage yet to remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft or the Pittman arm from its shaft. Did loosened all the bolts so at least I could turn the gear box and take off the power cylinder casing. To my big surprise (and disappointment) I did not see any clear...
That's a new one for me, never heard it before. Worth a try (if I can get candles here)
So I will try with my small burner and some spare fillings, see if those two tricks work.
I tried to remove the Pitmann arm of our M51A2. Earlier I already tried to remove the steering wheel as well. I used two pulling devices, one smaller with two legs, one larger (about 1 1/2 feet long, solid, heavy) with three legs. In all cases, I soaked them in WD several days in front several...
You know those days that everything just goes perfect, everything falls into its place straight away? ...
Well, this was not one of them
aua
Some of the pieces and slivers of steel I took from the steering gearbox. The lager piece at left looks like a part of a bearing or seal cover about...
As starting remark, the system is not leaking oil anywhere, so all outside seals seem to be ok.
Started to take down the rest of the steering assembly following TM ...20 and especially TM ..34-2-2, pages 70 to around 150.
"Drain the steering gear box". Did anybody ever manage that...
Bump after the GA rally snow-under. Anybody knows what is the manufacturer and type details on the late M39 5-tons replacement steering assembly? Or is it "just" the new 809 series steering? If so, I did not find those specs, any help would be helpful.
The thread includes a lot of good advice, so I will continue here rather than start a new thread.
Most important remark: reread your own threads BEFORE you start work again, can help and at least makes you feel less stupid.
Since 2014, the truck has not moved much, and the last two years...
Milwaukee just released the 2767-22, a wee bit better than the 2763. Unfortunately, they don't deliver it yet in Europe, so I have to do with our version of the 2763 (nought it last months). Tried it out on the nuts of the bumper and winch, which are even more rusted in place and painted over as...
Life threw a curved one stopping us from coming as well aua.
At least we were away on a meeting about military stuff as well, but even Olga agreed that being at the GA rally would have been better.
I was looking into something like that for the 5-ton, maybe even using the hydraulic pump of the power steering. I think the CUCV has something like that, called hydro-boost? I forgot the details, but had decided that it was too complicated, expensive if bought new, and getting too far from...
Very simple. Each old link always has the https://www.steelsoldiers.com/.../xxxx... structure, where xxx is a number referring to the thread.
No matter what is written in the beginning, just replace everything BEFORE the number starting with the / slash with...
Not by a long way, the thread How Cold/Hot is it Where You Live? is already on 699 pages, a staggering 6986 posts. However, this is probably the longest on-topic vehicle-specific thread (disregarding the "what did you do to ... threads). An impressive record, since I think there are about...
Disclaimer: I read most threads and posts (including my own) stating that getting the drum off without removing the axle and then drum and hub as one is near impossible. And yes, I will take of the drum following the on the forum described method of taking the shafts out first etc etc.
Today I...
I restored way worse when as a student restoring old Volvos and an old Mercedes 508 Postbus made into a camper. The cab structure is a question of taking a high-speed angle grinder with cutting blade, take out the rotten stuff well back into solid steel, then remodel the missing structure...
I tried to look into the TMs on this but I cannot find the TM I probably need.
The M39 series have the ...20 TM, which is a ORGANIZATIONAL MAINTENANCE MANUAL which gives a detailed description of the trucks at the beginning, including details on the manufacturers of the steering assembly, oil...
Any idea if it is significantly better than the standard Ross Hydrapower steering?
Did you ever looked if they also changed the hydraulic pump or only "the bits above the mechanical steering box".
PMRamsey asked me if my steering had been upgraded from the standard Ross Hydrapower on my M51A2 to the steering from the M809 series.
Is this something that the military did standard with the later M39s during overhaul?
Did anybody here on the forum already did this and do you need to...
