Re: Safety towing
I was being specific on the physics. With a good attachment point and good chains, the same load suspended perpendicularly will exert MORE force on two chains strung between the load to the side (ie a very tight angle between the support point and the load vector)...
The crossing doesn't weaken the chain. Tighter angles increases the force depending on what the vectors of that force are.
TAke a rope, spread it across a wide angle, pull down in the middle. the forces pulling inwards are FAR higher than the force pulling down. It's a sort of leverage...
You could get some dual voltage or single voltage LED's for the trailer to reduce the draw. I'd also make sure the trailer has a GOOD solid ground going back to the truck. If it does not, it could be causing problems.
Did you pull the brake controller's power from the Lighting Circuit? If so...
Those BTR40s are apparently based on a LOT of Soviet copied parts of Dodge trucks. I think that was part of the reason the Israelis re-used and rebuilt the ones they captured from the Arabs.
Insofar as importation of armor. Get a deposit on a piece of armor, get the data, send it to the ATF on...
If you want more axle articulation you could build a new pivot to make the axle pivot like on a Scammel Pioneer.

The plan is to get base weights of all the vehicles in their stowed condition to get a GOOD working weight of the armoured cars and the truck and trailer combo. That way when we're on the road for an event we won't have as much if anything to argue about with a scale master.
I half figure since...
RE: Re: RE: 5 Tons, trailers and Max GVW
I'm not veering away from the 915 Line hauls, I have downsized what I figure on towing with the 5 tons though. It all depends on whats available when we finally get to the point that we need to move the heavier armoured cars to events.
RE: Re: RE: 5 Tons, trailers and Max GVW
I would say one of the line haul tractors from that class of trucks WOULD be nice. More civilian styled and 'slightly' less austere.
Insofar as Good/Fast/Cheap. (you only get two of the three)
I figure the 5 Tons fit that bill. They're Good and...
Ok, so a 25 ton trailer will weigh around 10,000-12,000 lbs. Not bad and reasonable. For 2 armoured cars that's well within the range for an M818. We could go with smaller trailers and still carry the two. I am at least figuring on finding a dodgy trailer for less than $10,000, reworking the...
RE: Re: RE: Diamond T 981
Around here, you can't be sure.
I have it on good authority that some members removed a transmission by cribbing the transmission and then lifting the deuce up off.
Re: RE: 5 Tons, trailers and Max GVW
Mostly the events are regional to the Mid-Atlantic region. If we base the 5-ton at one of the unit member's homes in Culpeper, Va, we'd be proximate by about 5 hours to most of the events we attend. There's the odd event in New York but that's not a big...
I've got the Class A Non-CDL license.
So the 80,000 lbs limit is the weight of trailer + load and not Trailer + Truck + load?
So with a 5 Ton Semi-tractor, 37500 is my max towed limit.
2 vehicles is ~22,000 lbs with ~15,000 for the trailer which is probably easier to find. Personally, I...
And one more question on the aspect of permissible load for the M818. The book lists it as 37500. I guess that's my limit. ie 18.75 tons.
I guess then, that 3 armoured cars is too much for a 5 ton to properly haul.
