The 302 GMC is a late 1930s design engine with four main bearings, no full flow oil filter, no hardened exhaust seats in the head, siamesed ports, etc. It is slow because you have 130 horsepower at 3200 rpm. There isn't really a lot that you can do to really increase horsepower without spending...
I have no idea about the G56. I went out and looked at the NV5600; the bellhousing is aluminum but the main case and tail housing is rusty iron. Dodge doen't paint ANY part of the drivetrain.
Here is some more anecdotal information from the tractor crowd on engine life:

I found this with a quick search regarding engine life:
http://www.freewebs.com/whitetractorcumminsconversions/
which states:
If one down side to the 2-135/2-155 were to be identified, it would be the White/Hercules engines. Although these engines create a tremendous amount of low end...
We have the Panasonic 261 Gunslinger at the farm. Works very well for thin and thick metals and was priced very well. Was priced ~$2100 when we bought it several years ago.

I would buy the Miller 211MVP if I were to buy one to use at home.
I haven't been able to find numbers for the LDT. I woudl be surprised if they were much different.
The 5.9 cummins is a very fair comparison as the peak torque occurs at the same speed (2000 rpm) and peak horsepower is within 100 rpm.
Found this with a quick search:
8V92:
0.345 BSFC minimum at 1700 RPM, for an efficiency of roughly 39.8%.
0.355 BSFC at rated horsepower, for an efficiency of roughly 38.7%.
Series-60:
0.311 BSFC minimum at 1550 RPM, for an efficiency of roughly 44.2%.
0.315 BSFC at rated horsepower, for...
If you read the text books on engine design, the ONE factor enabling multifuel-ability is high compression ratio. There have been other multifuel engines which have neither a fuel density compensator nor the MAN combustion chamber design. That said, having really high compression ratio causes...
I finally got back to the power steering after several weeks. During that time, all of the air had worked out of the system resulting in a normally working system. I did replace the 1kpsi pump with a 1.5kpsi pump purchased of off ebay, though, to increase available force. The mistake that I...
