Maybe they just did not want the guys shifting it. You can shift it by hand form under the truck. Just let all the air out of the truck and shift it or have someone push the button on the shiftier.
Castle Bravo on here may have a linkage.
They can be a bear, I clean off the paint, rust and put a little oil penetrate on them, then use my 1" impact and it still works hard. I feel your pain!
Be sure to disconnect the batteries before you start. The Tack and Speedo cable are what is holding it. Also you can remove the the power and start switches and that will help.
Looks like it got some water in it and set for sometime. I would replace the bearings and race. My M936 was like that when I got it, it was so bad it was starting to make some noise.
