No doubt using any substance in your deuce as fuel that has not had the government's share of the cost added to it is a crime if you are on the highway.

I would clean the brake shoes with brake cleaner and then sand them with 200 grit paper until you see clean material. This is not as drastic a measure as you think it might be. You remove the contaminated material and that is maybe .010 lining. Not much really.

Adjusting bearings properly is key to maintaining cool hub temps. Also if a brake shoe, or shoes are dragging, you are guaranteed to have a hot hub. I would add that if you have one axle doing the majority of the braking those hubs will consistently be hotter.
