FWIW, we always hear (see) comments about the " fuel and air swirl", refer to picture 3 in post 26, look at the bottom of the piston cup, you can see the swirl pattern. (Disregard the trash in the cup, this was before cleaning.)

Do you have a swaged rope termination or one of the Electroline end fittings? If swaged, you will need another installed by a rope shop. If the Electroline, a new "torpedo" can be purchased from Esmet or a dealer. Do not attempt to reassemble with the old broken insert.

Power valve on these has a brass piston operator. They can stick. In the oil, gas contamination will make the ventilation valve pull vapors that make the mixture rich, So that closing the idle mixture screw attempts to lean it out. Yes the exhaust will smell rich. If your oil level is high then...

Check your OIL, what you describe sounds like a damaged fuel pump diaphragm. Level ok? Smell?

An A2 should not suffer with lag between 3rd and 4th. The hole in ratios is on the A1 and the 800 series they have the overdrive transmission. Has someone replaced the transmission with and overdrive? Where is 5th in your shift pattern, at the seat or at the dash?
