I am leaving Sunday to pass thru Roswell, Albuquerque, and to Los Alamos. Pickup truck trip this time, as the M8109 is not road ready yet.
The goal is to retrieve a 42uF 12,000 volt oil capacitor. It's free. It can't be shipped because of PCB, but it is no leaking.
I am not yet sure exactly...
There is nothing like a purpose-made DC-type magnetic circuit breaker for protecting your wiring and in some cases acting as a power switch. This is not an ad, but an explanation why they are so useful and only incidentally where they can be had for $2 each.
All circuits on the previous radio...
For my M818, I was given a 100A alternator of the kind that goes on a hummvee. Now, it also has the correct 5T-size pulley on it, thatnks to the shop that gave it to me. There is no key in the keyway as the HMMWV alternator key is much larger than the keyway on the 5T pulley, but the pulley...
I found this in a surplus house in Omaha.
The RDZ receiver is alive.
The autotune is very nice to watch.
The RF tuning (VFO) is apparently confused, but the IF is very much alive.
Receiver, shipboard, 225-400 MHz, 15.5 MHz IF, manual tuning or 10-channel autotune, Collins and National...
i have a drveability issue and I hope the experts with experience can help.
I have my tires issues pretty much worked out, have fixed the spare, etc etc.
The truck is an M818 with an M109 box, 16.00x20's, and the box is 3" above the frame via oak planks. The other mods are a lift gate and a...
This covers some troubleshooting to diagnose a no-crank issue on a M818 with the Cummins NHC-250.
SITUATION:
The starter is heard to click and engage but the engine does not turn. There might be a sizzling noise or not after a second or two. (do not lean on the starter like that..)
First...
As I mentioned in the thread http://www.steelsoldiers.com/military-vehicle-road-trips/45602-road-trip-dfw-chester-il-dec-26-jan-9-a.html , the engine has not run very smoothly, was almost impossible to start without ether, and would not keep prime after 45 minutes.
Here are pictures of the PT...
My friend has asked:
I've been trying for several years to figure out which radios were used on the jeeps at Fort Gordon, GA during my MP training there in 1971.
The radios I remember had dynamotors, and I think they had a carbon mic. Some jeeps were also equipped with a separate receiver...

On some pages I get this annoyance from Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1 running on Windows XP:
"Additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page"
This little note appears at the top of the content window. When I tell it to get the plugin, it can't find it and does not say what...
I fond this little blurb from CAT on Welcome to the HCVC however it was disjointed into several images so I made a PDF of it.
It tells about cavitation and pitting and how to prevent it.
This is apparently not to be disregarded on an NHC-250.
The cummins website says that Cummins engines have 8 digit serial numbers. Mine seems to be number 716637. (NHC250)
Therefore I cannot enter the serial number in order to see the manual.
Can anyone comment on their NHC250 serial number? 6 or 8 digits?
why does my new avatar seem to be very small, and everyione else's is full size?
I tried 80x80, 160x160, and full size. All same result.
When I switched from the customary mean kitty to the truck, it shrunk.
It's hard to believe this is the 4th major road tip for me in 4 years. I have a friend along this time to help in case anything goes wrong. My friend Jacob, he has a strong back, isn't afraid of adventures:grd:, and a keen eye for ladies (you ought to meet his GF:drool:), and that combination is...
Well it looks like some unexpectedly cold weather has come about. It could be 29 degrees Saturday night and I'll be in Little Rock. even cooler a bit farther North till the storm blows through, or not, maybe 19 at night. I wouldn't worry but I may have to start the beast early in the AM and it...
I've read here that the TM available is for the newer NHC-250, and that the M800 series uses an older engine.
Can anyone verify this, and if so, how do I get the manual for the NHC-250 in the 800 series trucks?
I want to learn everything possible about the engine.
Here is a little tip on battery safety. Maybe this could become a sticky thread if there is not one on battery safety already. It's an important topic. Having witnessed a battery explosion in someone's face and a fire caused by a short on a cranking battery, It's worthwhile to discuss it and see...
I have restricted many ports on the home router due to annoyances from the internet. Unfortunately GL seems to use one I am not familiar with for the LOGIN function.
What port is necessary to be open on the user's computer to have success when clicking on LOGIN ? It is between 111 and 8079. I...
I always see things coming up for auction, but once the auction starts, they don't show up there.
example: searching for "m818, m817, m813" and selecting "any" keywords will show me all the shorter wheelbase 5 tons that have yet to start the auction. Same for any keywords - you see what -will-...
