You definately do much better with weight in the back in the snow. I was refering more to how all the big Oshkosh deicated snow trucks are always single rear axle single tires. You get much better contact preasure which helps alot on ice.
I am contemplating (first I need to find a truck) the pros and cons of dropping off a rear axle on a truck setup for super singles. Here are two examples. The first truck is almost exactly what I an thinking about (probably cut 2 feet off the end), but I like alot of the secound one as well...
I have a 4 speed aux box with 2 under, 1 direct, and 1 over, but it's nearly 18" long and I don't know if it will fit, but a 20 spd would be sweet. [^]
I don't know anything about them but they have custom rims and very good tire prices. 16-20's with 95+ tread for $125!

From what I've been told from a friend that builds diesels for tractor pulls is that in a non-turbo motor your trying to protect the pistons from too much heat. In a turbo motor (especially older non-ball bearing turbos) the turbo bearings are the first thing to go- blows the turbo and sents...
Colomil, I know of one near Fort Collins, CO. It's not really a salvage yard, actually it's not a business at all, but a freind of mine has about 100+ military vehicles of all types from jeeps to large high speed tractors, lots of deuces. He doesn't have a phone (or power or water for that...
Firefighting versions of the HEMTTs have full production independent suspension, and all current production ones run 16-20's. I'll semd you a PM with a better pic (I have several somewhere, but I'll have to look).
If anyone is interested, I have a real nice A frame bed (on an oil field truck now) that is very similar to Kenny's that I might be willing to part with. It's non military, but I think it's actually quite a bit nicer. It has a Ramsey PTO drive winch, an all steel diamond plate deck, 1/8" wall...
Can anyone tell me what the empty weight and GVWR of a 5 ton is? M54 or M813 cargo. I know they vary allot, but the numbers I have seen online are all over the board- 15k to 23k empty and GVWR's up to 55k. The reason I ask is I want to know if I can register a 5 ton as a non CDL truck in...
Has anyone out there converted an M105 trailer or similar to make it dump? The thought of using a long travel bottle jack as a piston, like the ones on engine hoists, seems appealing if it would work- but I don't know if a bottle jack would function at that kind of angle. It would be really...
