    Axle seal quality

Outer seals I have: inner diameter = 61.9+ mm [2.438 in]; distance from inner radius to rubber seal material on the inner seal surface = ~14.84 mm [~0.585 in]. Re shims: 1-A differential shop has a stack of ~10 shims [$20]of an appropriate outer diameter, but the id is slightly less than...

    How To: Hub Flip

Very well done! I expecially appreciate the efforts to incorporate relevant comments and inputs. Many thanks. Re the cork keyway seal, I recently pulled a 'warmer-than-the-others' hub to look at the innards. I found the little cork seal to be a section of rubberized cork tubing, rather than...

    Axle seal quality

Herr Gringel, Ihre Skizze war ausgezeichnet. Danke zehr fur die nummern! Sie hoffentlich keine taub wegen der Truppefordernmaschinen sind! For what it's worth, the flat-stock part of the seals I received from Erik's is just under 1.5 mm thick, and the bare part of the inner surface is about...

    Axle seal quality

Folks, Been re-reading as many of the numerous seal-related threads that I have been able to find. Since I am not set up to press an offset, I'd like suggestions as to how to come to own appropriate shims. I have two rear hubs that are somewhat warmer than the rest...not blazing hot, but...

    Who has a "parts deuce"

Eagle, I was at Mike Arnold's shop at the end of August. He had a new one and his price was, I seem to remember, quite good. You might give him a try. bs

    1st Deuce Project Begins

Congratulations...strong work on the truck! The date of your last post I was on the side of I-10 putting a single alternator belt on to replace the two that crapped ou, and hoping the single would get me to a NAPA the next day that might have more than one belt. Finished the recovery and have...

    mustache spring keeps breaking

Had to adjust/tighten up the parking break after recovery...had a lot of slop in the springs and shoes. I'll be under the truck in the morning. If I can get the uppermost spring off, I'll send you dimensions...might be of value. bs

    M35A2 un-insurable

Hi, Reality is that some sort of 'assigned risk' policy might be your only option for couple of years, as the DWAI has you in a bad spot. You might try Colorado Farm Bureau Ins. bs

    More Hot Rear Axle Hubs

H/G/R, Thanks, gentlemen. In a somewhat perverse way I'm actually looking forward to this! Parts hunt starts tamale for this former govt scientist. :jumpin: bs

    More Hot Rear Axle Hubs

This seemed the appropriate thread to tie into. On the last recovery leg from Redstone, rearmost axle hubs were noticeably warmer than the front rears...could hold my hand on 'em for as long as desired, but they were significantly warmer. They cooled down and stabilized over the last 130...

Deuce recovery: "The time has come," the walrus said...

Houston, we have landed! With side trips, about 2200 miles. Engine ran like a Rolex, but a bit louder. Ear plugs and a PlaneQuiet ENR headset took care of that. Springer seat obviated the need for the wheelchair pad I brought. Lost alternator belts 7 miles west of Boerne, Tx on Labor Day...

Gentlemen, Thanks for the good words. Turns out the Al shop put in DOT 5.1, not DOT 5. Sheist! So, I've spent the last couple of hours trying to run some down here to have on hand...no luck. Turns out that all of the glycol ester fluids are mixable, so I can use 3 or 4 with the 5.1. I'll...

STATUS: Several daysand ~1100 miles. into recovery. Currently in Houston. Next jump Sunday. Deuce is running well, brakes are good. Fluid leak just showed up inside the right rear wheel around Dallas. Checked the accumulation, and hub temps, every 40 or so miles...hubs all about the...

    Threw a Dog Bone

For what it's worth, I was at Mike Arnold's shop today, and he has a remarkable number of what I think are new 'dogbones' amidst the trove of stuff he wrote abut sometime back. Prices are good. bs

John, Thought about that. The spousal unit is a wound-speccialist RN...got me a slick foam-gel cushion [mfg Medline]. I'll be posting about how it works out! Still adding to the list, beyond what has already been suggested: padlocks, digital voltmeter/tester. Thanks, bs

On Sunday I fly to Huntsville to pick up a deuce...1973 AMG w/o w, ht, canvas, out of the Ky NG. Looks pretty good in GL photos. A shop there has changed fluids, filters and batteries, and generally 'laid on hands'. No problems have surfaced so far, based on multiple conversations with the...

    Battery cut off switch

 Has anyone installed a marine switch, like a Perko? They're 4-5 times the cost of the HF and some other switches noted in several threads, but one can get 250-300 amp continuous ratings in a keyed switch, and I think they're waterproof. Re the common key issue, I'd bet the first kid...

    Battery cut off switch

:?: Re switch installation, can anyone tell me if a deuce alternator is unitized? If no, then conceivably a kill switch with AFD is a good idea. bill steinkampf

    Western trip starts tomorrow

Jacks is about 6 hrs from the south rim [GC to Flagstaff, I-17 to I-10 to Tucson]. He does have a boatload of stuff! In addition, he's right at 1.5 miles from the Pima Air and Space Museum...decent spot to visit if you have any airplane interest. Great for young boys. bs
