They were designed to be run anywhere Uncle Sam chose to go, as-is. With that said, anything you want to do to make its life in retirement better, I am sure it won't complain.

Might be plugged by mud wasps... not uncommon. Got anything small you can run into the drain line? Its just a bulkhead fitting that goes behind the battery and to the drain plug on the tank. Could be trash in your tank too, that has settled onto the backside of the fitting in the tank...

Don't know if you have mud wasps where you are, but they will fill that drain port unless you block it when not in use.

To retain the nut that might come loose ( so it doesn't vibrate off the stud), as well as to be a hindrance to putting a tool on the lug. At least that's how I see it.

Agreed with both above. With that said, the working envelope on the 1030 sucks to me on everything past belt changes compared to the 802.

1/2-14. The stock plug that goes into that drain hole I believe accepts the square shank of a 3/8" socket (though I feel like over the years I've also had machines in with an Allen wrench hex on the inside).
