Had some of those issues when I was working on our fuel probs this winter. Ended up using an old screw driver to cold chisel a groove into the side and turning it that way . . . w/ a hammer and a chisel.
I then replaced all of those screws w/ allen headed screws . . . no more probs. Details...
With ours we checked all the axle, etc. tags and came up w/ a lot of `72 year dates on parts that looked orig.
We didn't have a date stamp on the data plate either.
[thumbzup] That's how I get to know my Mechs, . . . take off on some adventure w/ them . . . see what they tell you.
I wouldn't know what it's like NOT to carry food, water, tools, parts (. . . maybe that compressor is going to go out this trip, :) off across some desert w/ a new mech . . ...
Guess this is not going to happen again while you're here. Hope your trip north(?) goes well. I'll be headed for N.Nev the start of Aug. If you're anywhere near there maybe we can get in some Dirt Track Travel
Those are all the things that I'm moving. Fuel tanks (2) - in bed, Batts - where fuel tank was, tool box - gone / steps lifted to the level of the tool rack, spare - in bed w/ hoist and stand up mount on the side.
I will relocate fuel line as well.
Will post pics as it progresses.
You don't really have to drop the tank. There's a plug in the bottom. If you take the pump out (which you can do on a cargo bed) to check the hose, you will have access into the tank.
I drained, filtered, refilled, drained, filtered, refilled a few times. Leave the last bit in the bucket every...
I too would say filters if they were not changed w/ the oil.
The other thing that doesn't get mentioned much is the hose from the in-tank to the top plate. I've had to replace the hose clamp on them for both of our truck. Full details here, Surging
If this was for me, it didn't have a vent line on it. They had used one of those bobble head vents that seal against water intake. I hooked it up to the vent line that they disconnected because of the "venting too close to the MC vent" problem. The MC had been disconnected from that line at some...
When I first got my truck it had a vent like they run on the trannys and axles. It would vacuum seal the gas tank after driving a short while . . . pulled that off and re-vented it to an old hard line that was meant for that (the MC has been vented separate).
