Pretty thorough write up...but the string alignment method is only good enough to get you safely to the alignment shop. These things need a good four wheel alignment to save your tires and handle properly.

I agree that taking it out and monkeying with it could easily stop the noise for a while. You know that axle is bad so you are doing the right thing by replacing it now

I went with trucklite headlites as I like the look of them. If I wasnt, I would find some Cibie "E-code" H4 conversion lights. Hella is dot crap nowadays I used to run hella E-codes that weren't bad, but Cibies throw light better IMO

Ive noticed this different brown, too. I originally thought it was just faded CARC brown but it seems like it matches others with the same off brown. I want to keep mine as original as possible but i dont like the mismatch to the correct brown on the canvas.
