All you need is the necessary clearance (which probably isn't in the TM) and then you squish it. Should have a gauge on the package. Unfortunately I don't know what that clearance needs to be
I have 7-8 I need to test here. I’ve tried every drill imaginable-I can hear when the alternator “loads” but just can’t spin it enough to get actual charging out.

I know Matt well, and have helped him troubleshoot a lot of things-a trans issue never came up. Ever.
Mine came with no batteries. Put some in-did just like you said , then about a week later started charging the batteries. Charged and ran on dc just fine. Then I screwed up and let them discharge. Same thing again. Took about 3 days for the batteries to start charging. 🤷🏻♂️
