To add to what others have said, inline engines typically have more torque potential than vee engines. Compare the 4.9 liter (300) Ford I-6 to their own 5.0 liter (302) of the same era, and the 300 is the one you want for pulling a trailer or heavy truck. If you had a Jeep, the 304 worked well...
I saw one locally that looked to be all original and had air force markings on it. The truck had a utility type body on the back. It may have been a repaint, but the paint looked very old and original. The odd thing was, the truck was gray not blue...did the air force ever paint their vehicles...
The EUC process itself is a joke. I can understand doing a background check on someone, but that isn't completely what the EUC is about. Just going by the name, End Use Certificate, they are concerned with how the item will be used. Does anyone really think that if someone wanted to misuse these...
Just FYI, I'm sure you already know this, but I don't want to assume...I hope those aren't standard duty engine stands. The ones you find for normal automotive engines will never hold a multifuel (or most diesels). Just putting a Jeep 4.0 on a light duty stand was a bit scary, so I welded in a...
I'm keeping watch as well. I can't get the show on TV as our cable company won't carry Spike, but I keep watch on the web. X-treme 4x4 is one of my favorite 4x4 shows. I think I like it because it is the most down-to-earth. Many of the projects are things anyone can do, not the "low budget" $25k...
Ahhh, diesel myths. Turning up fuel won't make a rod knock, or burn up bearings. If you go too far you can melt a piston or blow a head gasket. Watching the first video, his EGTs were probably fine, because it only smoked when he first got on the throttle. Once the turbo spooled, it cleaned...
If grounding the blue wire at the controller makes the light come on, then the problem is with the controller itself. You said that you know for sure the glow plugs are actually getting power. So you can either live with not having the light come on, and just listen for the relay to click off...
****, I like that price! I wish I had the cash. Nobody probably pays attention...but do you have any idea about the fuel mileage of one of the diesel military versions?
Jim
Oh, I wasn't judging whether they are worth what the military pays...I would rather have one of those than a Humvee, and the cost is comparable. I was just throwing the price out there because someone mentioned that a military close could be made from a civilian model. I guess if you looked real...
I have a Grand Wagoneer axle here, which uses the exact same design, so I grabbed a few pics so you know what to look for. Ignore the wheel bolt pattern, but other than that, its a Dana 44 with the hub deletes.
I would have grabbed more pics but it was raining.

If they have the large silver caps that pop off, yes, they are easy to swap. just remove the silver cap, push inward on the splined drive ring, and remove the large circlip, and the small one around the end of the axle shaft. The splined drive ring will pop out. If the grease is old and dry you...
Yea no kidding. 1/2" fine thread Grade 8 bolts have a tensile strength of 24,000 lbs. each. If you have more than 96k lbs. pulling on that hitch, you have bigger problems to worry about.
Jim
I have nothing to add to help the OP, you all did an excellent job of that. Re: Bonehead employees at some of these stores, I see them as a necessary evil. If I already know what i want, I'd rather go to TS or a similar place and look for it myself and save some cash. The minimum wage employees...
I hope you have deep pockets. New price for a civilian model is around $125k. Used are $75-$100k. Great vehicle, but I would hate to spend even $50k for a beat one then pull it apart to make a military clone.
Edit: I did find a few for $20-$50k on ebay, but they were either very high...
:ditto: Even if you had to use 3 or 4 to build 1, it would be better than scrapping them. And so many of them look like they have pretty decent bodies!
A TH400 is bulletproof with any stock rebuild. There really isn't anything that needs upgrading, unlike some other autos. You can get a good rebuild kit from Napa, Summit Racing, or many other sources. If you choose, you could install a shift kit, but make sure you look for one recommended for...
According to that CPL number, those are factory turbos, not a retrofit. That number comes up as a Cummins BCII Turbo. I can't find any real info on it though. But at least it should help that they aren't retrofitted turbos.
Jim
So taxpayer dollars end up being wasted by scrapping perfectly useful vehicles, and more money spent buying newer, more expensive, and less reliable replacements, because some pansies can't be bothered to drive a standard? Unfortunately it doesn't surprise me a bit.
It reminds me of when my...
All those holes, the ones surrounded by the brown metal...those are high speed airflow holes, right? I think the side ones must be vents for brake cooling. Yea. I think I got it now.
