BTW the temp switch should be closed at room temp, and open when it reaches around boiling point, removing the wire simulates the switch opening thus activating the fan.
There is that word "assume" they did nothing misleading, even if it had batteries 90% of the time they are crap.

This subject has been covered many times, try searching the forums, short answer group 24 seems to be a common "cheap" way out, make sure to secure them and I would only use AGM batteries under my wife's derriere, that box is fairly sealed so hydrogen gas buildup could be an issue.
Google 12339235, they are everywhere, HPG has the 5582366 although that (TM) does not look right, I think the washer goes between the adapter and the caliper.

It looks like you need #17, (EDIT and #16) although the parts diagram seems to show a rubber hose going to the caliper, hopefully someone can clarify.

About the only thing you can do now is put some M-M oil in the glow plug holes, and wait for a while, put the glow plugs back in finger loose so no critters get in there while waiting.
For sure have him secure that alt in the seat (and any other items) or it will likely take a hike, possibly injuring someone along the way!
