Can't say enough in defense of 'common sense'.
Know your vehicle, know your own abilities and limitations, know the terrain.
Don't be shy about stopping and walking a particular stretch before "conquering it"; more often than not you'll spot some trouble areas you wouldn't have seen from behind...
I've got M900 series axles on the baby HEMTTand am running 1600X20 Michelins mounted on the 1000X20 lock-ring Budd wheels like the HEMTTs use but with a slightly different offset. I flipped the wheels (dish in on the front, dish out on the rear) and they're within an inch or two of following...
Kenny, a simpler option (if it works) would be a handheld pyrometer. We use them to take pinpoint readings as they have a laser dot that shows where we're sampling. If the cast-iron manifold doesn't transfer heat too uniformly there should be a cold or hot spot at the offending cylinder's...
Pre and post turbo would be lost on the likes of me but I do think individual clylinder performance/function might be handy to know.
Worked on the UP 844 steam locomotive and it's set up to sequentially sample each driving axle's bearing temp so I know that pinpointing a problem early on can be...
RE: left hand light
If you need additional tags, see Saturn Surplus. The carry the blank tags; with a small number stamp set you can re-create your own for any new wire runs or replace missing tags on original wiring.
Sounds like a bad ground or dead spot on your starter commutator, worn brushes or on the solenoid contacts.
Not the easiest to find on the hardware store circuit but these guys are invaluable in making a good ground. Clean spot to bright metal then put one against ground, apply ground lead...
Welcome Kirk,
How big is the spot that needs to be repaired?
Mules are magnesium construction so they need to be repaired with like material AND if welding is needed it has to be done under controlled conditions in an inert atmosphere or you can end up with one heck of a blaze. Magnesium, even...
Bjorn,
The number over your glove box might be an agency tally number (my donor LVS cab for the baby HEMTT project had a similar plate with number that turned out to the USMC inventory number) The other number sure looks like a manual number and I'm pretty sure some branches like the Air Force...
RE: HiLift
Just make sure you're securely squared up if you're using a HiLift as you'll be close to the top reach of the jack by the time you get a wheel off the ground; and they aren't extremely stable with the little footprint they have. I use and recommend one of the air over hydraulic...
Sacrificing the thermostat is cheap insurance against it sticking later and taking out your engine. If you aren't crazy about the idea of beating it into submission, what about something like CLR, Lime-Away, or another brand of Calcium, Lime, Rust remover? Soaking the cast iron housing won't...
RE: Pre- Filter housing
If it's like ours it just a dirt/dust seperator. No filter element in it; it just spins the air so that the crud is centrifically removed.
Life vests would be a nice addition. We found that we could drive them right under the surface of the water if we entered at too steep an angle. AND, once submerged, they're extreme miserable to try and tow back out.
Aside from checking for bad grounds, which deuces are plagued by; I'd say it sounds like dirty/bad solenoid contacts or starter brushs. Cleaning the commutator where the brushs ride is a good idea too as they get loaded up with a fine film of oil and dust from the brushs as they wear, and glaze...
RE: Can someone give me more info on what these are like to
I can only speak for the military versions (true HMMWVs) but for them, they're; hot, noisy, hard to see out of, not very roomy, uncomfortable to sit in, a lane and a half wide, miserable to parallel park,, in for repairs more often...
Thanks for the kind words. I first saw the trick used when I was working for the S.P.R.R. Auto mfrs. would do that to new cars before they loaded them for transport by rail. Then when the cars get to where they're going, the car lot detail guys wash the cars and any road grime, locomotive...
Any of the better drawing programs can generate stars with any number of points and of any size in files that plotters and similar systems can understand. I use CorelDRAW 8.0 for example and it's .cdr files seem to be universally accepted... at least in my universe.
RE: Re: RE: 5 Ton Power Steering Question
Rumplecat,
Give the tech guys at BAB Steering a call and ask for Bill Carlson in tech support. He says he's been at this for 45 years and can give you the straight dope on what you want to run. Gotta say though that, to me, 90w sounds pretty stiff for...
RE: Re: RE: 5 Ton Power Steering Question
OK... Just got off the phone to an outfit that does all kinds of heavy duty power steering work and got some info to share.
First; they say not to use 10w motor oil in power steering applications. Their recommendation is either Dexron with the warning...
