The early days, I finally have something started.
Chassis & axles done!
I got really good at swapping out rear ends...this truck went on to absolutely ruin 13 sets of ring & pinion!
DG ps...like the flowerpot?
Rust there is common problem in those Dodges.
I had to fix that once, so I sandblasted off all the rust (top & bottom).
Then I built it up with a fiberglass kit. It lasted over 35 years I know of. No more rust...
Sourcing and replacing the cowl is a lot more work in my opinion.

I built this over two years, starting back in '73.
What I wound up with:
3-53N Detroit 3 cyl engine.
Spicer 3053 5-speed OD trans w/PTO.
Full air-over-hydraulic brake system w/gladhands for trailers.
Johnny-bar for trailer brake actuation.
11.00-18 Goat tires/wheels on homemade adapter plates...
Another thing not mentioned so far is the tank venting.
As fuel goes out, air has to go in. Make sure the cap is set to "vent".
Otherwise your pumps can't overcome the vacuum created.

Yes, he left after 8th grade to work with the CCC, helped build the Mesa Verde Monument.
In '38 he wound up in Yuma, AZ and started with Southern Pacific in '39, where he stayed until 1980.
Thanks for your interest. There are still Gilliam clan in Temple today.

Restoring an M37 is just like doing a car: the right parts, methods, and materials.
Sourcing them is the fun, doing it is the labor of love.
Most of it obvious, inspect things and do what needs to be done. None of it is rocket science.
Don't substitute civvy truck parts, stay with the...
Here in AZ, there is a part of Title 28 Motor Vehicle Code that can pertain to us.
If your vehicle is 25 years or older, you can purchase Historic Vehicle plates for it.
Regardless of weight or size, it is then non-commercial just like a motor home.
No CDL, lighting/marking requirements...
There is more to it than just a winch.
You also need a good snatch block, several heavy chains, and pulling girdles.
Proper rigging before a pull other than straight out needs all those items.
A healthy amount of common sense, and a good understanding of geometry helps.
If nothing else, get...
Like most tacticals within the model years, M37 (G741 series) don't mean much, as they are some 99.9% the same.
The B1's were later, and had a little different transmission/PTO, and rusted faster as they used a different steel alloy in the body metal.
Some features were deleted, like slave...
Yep, that transfer is really similar to those in the G744-series trucks.
Where you are confused, is air is used to pick the sprag rotation direction via a valve on the transmission. It decides which direction you are going, forward or reverse.
The front axle is designed to 'come online' when...
Bill Hirsch sells a really good tank sealer, specially made for Diesel fuel tanks.
I've had great luck with it.

Yep, leaky stuff that inflation system.
I put tubes in all my 20-bolt 10" wheels, no leaks over lots of time.
My M54A1 goes just fine in the Sonoran desert sand here without letting any air out, too.

Your reference to an M54 is off, the photo is of an 800-series truck.
G744 (M39 series, including the M54) has the air cleaner on the passenger side.

A shot of silicone seal works better than those cork plugs. Just make sure there is no oil in the groove beforehand.
And DON'T use any moly grease, it can react with any gear oil and become mud. Good old long fiber grease is plenty good in those axles.
