trying to get the 251 running again?

Vacuum leak? Spray intake and carb gasket seams with WD40 or other spray oil and see what you get. The oil will be thick enough to temporarily close up any leaks. Spraying when running will often pinpoint a leak by a change in RPM. If it flooded out for whatever reason then pulling the plugs and...

    another electrical problem

I've had several 404s and all have had two 12v batteries in series for the 24v system. Does your friend have a third 12v batt somewhere in the system? Maybe someone put one in for a 12v source and managed to get it wired-in in series too. There used to be some special application 18v aircraft...

    Semi Rims

I downloaded a drwg of the rim Oshkosh puts on the HEMTTs to the Tech Articles section. It's labeled 11"X20" (my mistake, should be 10"X20") Budd wheel for HEMTT. Looks like any of the ten hole rims the military is using on the 5 tons and up are the standard Budd pattern.

Good soarce for buying one of these trucks?

I've had a few Unimogs and can say they're pretty well designed trucks although heavily into redundency in circuits and the like. Not exactly speed demons but will climb a wall once you get them to it. Talk to Kurt at www.unimogswest.com True he's across the country from you but he's very...

    Semi Rims

If you're talking the ten stud 5 ton full air brake axles; they're 10 on 11" centers. Standard ten hole Budd wheels fit them just fine. That's the set-up I'm running on the baby HEMTT. Hope this helps.

    blinker not blinking.

Old advice but still a place to start. Check all your grounds; flasher controller body, wiring harness ground pigtail. bulbs and tail and front turn signal housings. Make sure you're getting power into the unit to start with; a bad harness that doesn't let the controller know when it's time to...

Plans for California trip in the works

Hey Bjorn, If you find yourself heading through the Sacramento area, let me know. The baby HEMTT and I are easy to find and would be glad to say hello. If you have enough time I can get you into our shop and a visit through our RR Museum.

Project Baby Hemmt - FOR LEONARD

Kenny, the seats in ours are pretty comfortable. Early version is spring loaded, later are air bags. They look odd because the seat cushion seems to tilt forward because of the linkage under it. As soon as you sit down it levels out. If it helps figure out the cab room needed; the seat cushion...

    drilling and counter sinking holes

Look into a center drill. Because of their construction they're also good for creating pilot holes especially in angled or round surfaces. www.use-enco.com and do a search for "combined drill and countersink"

Project Baby Hemmt - FOR LEONARD

baby HEMTT exhaust Well, after some soul-searching I decided to lose the driver's side fuel tank in favor of extra clearance for my Rube Goldberg steering linkage and a tool box to sit on the driver's side ex-tank brackets. Getting the fuel lines & transmission cooler lines plumbed up and will...

    The QUIET DEUCE

Thanks for the info Randy. What are the rough dimns on the muffler? I don't have a lot of room to work a muffler into on the baby HEMTT. Funny how something this big still has cramped quarters and pinch points.

    sand blast abrasive help

Remember that glass is just refined sand so you're no out of the woods on the silica concerns. Also, a thin layer of glass shot is just like walking on thousands of itty bitty glass balls... very, very slippery. Places out here have gone to ground walnut shells with pretty good results on...

    The QUIET DEUCE

Hey Jim, What brand and P/N on the muffler you say Randy put on to get down to nothing but engine noise and turbo whistle? I finished the exhaust on the baby HEMTT and I now have a system comprised of almost 10' of 4" exhaust pipe with three tasteful bends and ending with a flapper type rain...

    Paint chip numbers

Hey 22, Just for my records does the 498 color you're talking about have a 5 digit FS595b number?

    ring mount lubrication?

No lube as it's an open bearing. Any kind of grease in there would attract and hold dirt. Our motor pool guys say to run them dry and ocassionally blow them out with an air nozzle. (Everyone I've ever tried sounds dry when it's rotated). Constant use keeps them freed up so give yours a spin...

    Carguy455 with a Tank as a kid

Great pics. Don't think I ever saw one with what looks like a twin AA set-up. Like you avatar too. I grew up around McClellan AFB and the B-36s flew in and out of there all the time; along with the XC-99s and a bunch of other unusual birds.

Barstow has them. I'll be talking to them tomorrow and will get you a price.

    Paint chip numbers

Kinda what I figured. If anyone has an accurate color chip of it to send me, I can match it as close as I can with my color chip book.

    Paint chip numbers

I've got an FS595b Color Fan Deck but it doesn't go by color names. Can you be more specific as to application?
