I got a lot of parts with mine, so I've been working on a list myself. Definitely fuel filters, extra oil, bearing and seals for at least one axle, one axle boot, battery terminals, and a u-joint. If I was going to somethin like Haspin I'd probably bring some more parts in case someone else...
I just got some wheel bearing nuts that were made by Checker Cab Company in '53. Hmmm, what would a deuce with a yellow paint job and a checker board stripe down the side look like?? Might be good for NYC traffic.
No reason to feel foolish Brian, sounds like you pulled over as soon as you noticed something was wrong.
We were coming back to Ohio from Grayling one year after our AT there, and one of the guys did something really stupid. We were the maintenance sweep. The Wrecker driver, driving a 5 ton...
The other thing to consider is if they are all about the same temp. Usually you're not going to have a great difference between the wheels, and as was said, if you can keep your hand on the hub without burning it should be okay.
What does the ring gear look like? I hate to make things sound worse, but you'll need to check that too or you could wind up fixing the ring gear and the new starter. BTW, have you looked into getting that starter repaired?

If you have one on the truck or real close in a shop, a CO2 extinguisher is an option. The only thing is you would have to have the presence of mind to aim it directly at the intake and discharge the entire bottle. If the engine is still spinning when you run out of CO2, it could restart...
I don't think gear oil would necessarily be bad, maybe just limit it to a quart or two per tank. I would think the panty hose filter might be more of a problem, depending on who had worn them previously....
Yep, Detroits were known for that. Runaways can suck the oil out of the pan until they go Blooey. A lot of older fire trucks had emergency levers to seal the intake if it ran away.
Believe it or not, the new MRAP's don't have any gun mounts in them. The millitary constantly harped on not have ANYTHING that's not secured in them because of rollover's, but yet none had any where to stow a weapon. We had one guy who almost lost his arm when the door popped open going down...
And to be specific, they need to be under the axles themselves as close to the sides as possible. If yours won't reach up that high, you can use wood cribbing under the jacks, it should be free of splits, big knots, cracks, etc.
Seems to me that if you want it for a grip truck, you'd want the shop truck version so you could better secure your gear and keep it dry. Just a thought. Or you could do what we did with our shop deuce. We didn't have a shop truck so we got a set of the high ribs, lined the underside of the...
