The ground is the one furthest from the 2wire plug. If the alt was built incorectly and the ground is not isolated it can be used in the alt1 position and move alt one to the alt 2 position.

Easy to check. Take a VOM and check for continuity btween the ground post on the alternator and the alternator case. If you have continuity they got something wrong. Ie they built it for a 12V system. A 12V system ground is usually the alt case.
It is prob just that you fried the alt. if you pull the plug on alt1 you will notice it does not come on either. dont worry about the light till you get the alt rebuilt.
One of the best things you can do on these trucks is to start at the battery and go to every connection and clean it. Just follow the cables around. Use a wire brush and some sort of corrosion wash and clean all connections including the grounds, buss-bars etc. and alt connections. Just spend 3...
