Went to drain the crud out of the frame mounted fuel filter / water separator on my '71 M35, and instead of junk coming out, air went rushing in and it sounded like it was draining back into the tank through the lift pump.
I turned on the master, and I get plenty of fuel from the lift pump...
Thanks Speddmon and Isaac. I'll keep my eyes open - I'm really looking to get one of these diesel units before the cold weather sets in here in New England.
The MEP-002A's here all closed around $1300 - give or take a hundred or two, based on hours shown, condition, and whether they had an ASK...
It's a painful lesson - but reading the TMs carefully is important before operating equipment.
They mention to not idle except under certain conditions like starting - and then, only for a few seconds before going to governed speed - on most gensets.
Interesting - since the MEP-017A I bought was also listed as scrap - but required an EUC. It came through the process as scrap, too - because there was no normal paid-in-full invoice to download, one had to be emailed to me, and I was told by GL that was a normal process for scrap.
The...
I'd think about modern tires designed for snow; NDT == 'No Darn Traction' NDCC isn't much better.
Some of the folks that have singled-out will chime in, but everything I've seen indicated NDT and NDCC suck in the snow.
Rotella 15W40.
Why?
Because it says "15W40" stenciled on the inside of the hood, it's a good diesel-rated name brand, and it's cheap enough in 5 gallon buckets at Tractor Supply.
Read all the TMs on this site for the deuce and you'll learn a lot about these trucks. All that wonderful documentation we taxpayers funded is there for free downloading and reading.
You can go from not knowing much about them to being somewhat of an expert by devoting some of your time to...
I wanted one when I was a kid. That was 30 years ago.
I bought one when it became needed for chores around the property. I wasn't going to spend big money on a pickup from some bailed-out auto company - I wanted something that could work, and carry a load. Then I came to enjoy the simplicity...
You're missing a critical point - backfeeding the grid is to be avoided because it could kill someone.
Given the safety precautions they take, it's unlikely it would be a lineman that gets zorched - but you never know. Accidents happen.
Here's an example of something that could happen...
Good advice above - read the TMs, read the recovery threads. Buying this from a private seller takes a little of the risk out of the recovery - more if this person is in the business of recovering and going through the trucks before the private sale. Talk to the seller - ask questions about what...
Next time I run the MEP-017A I'll measure a couple head temperatures and calculate Trise. I suspect tje 018a and 017a should be somewhere in the same ballpark temperature wise, even though one is a 5 and the other a 10 KW unit - provided they are unloaded.
Very, very, very nice. Much nicer than my pot-luck GL truck from up in the salt country of the finger lakes of upstate NY.
You should have a blast with that, Scott.
Don't know how many quarts the 018A takes - but the smaller 017A takes 2-1/2 quarts including the filter. When I got mine, I used the same quality oil for the initial flush as the oil I put in after for service. The cost delta wasn't enough to seek another oil type to flush with.
Let us know...
I suspect you can find the TM and the LO that go with this unit in the resources section of this forum.
Nice genset; I've got its little gas-powered brother, the 5kW MEP-017A. Saw a nice 018A close today in Rock Island for ~$540.
Thanks, folks - those are all good data points; please keep 'em coming.
Agree with you, Speddmon - unless you've got a real specific application to power some surplus military electronic gear, or an application testing aircraft equipment, there's not much use for 400 Hz generators. As a parts...
Greetings., folks. A number of really nice gensets closed in various areas around the country today, and I'm really curious if they are still going for quite high prices, or if things have come back down a little from a couple months ago.
Given the distances involved, I didn't bid on any - so...
