Very common problem with the 6.5s And also the 6.2s. It because the water jacket on the heads are to far away from the cylinder. If you find heads from a 1997 and later GM fixed that issue by making the jackets in the head bigger. But if your short on time and money then go with that.
This month has been killer for me 3 weeks ago had a real bad electrical problem, the glow plugs would turn itself on when a load was put on it like the heater or lights. Found out to be fried grounding strap from the fire wall to engine block, took 2 weeks to find that had the whole dash taken...
