Well I did it. Just drove home an '86 M1008. I picked it up for $1500. The body is in great shape, very minor rust and just a couple little dings and dents. Engine cranks up and runs great, I had to drive it about 45 minutes to get it home. The trans has a crack on the top of the housing...
I'm definitely hooked on the 08s. I used to drive an '82 bronco and I loved that, but I'm wanting a truck. Topping out at 55 isn't a problem for me, I don't do any interstate hwy driving, and with my Volvo I don't go over 60 anyway.
