When I drove deuces in the Army in 1970-71 we were told only to use MOGAS when we had to and to dilute it with diesel if possible due to wear on the IP. They get terrible mileage on gas and have a noticeable lack of power. Also hard to start. I never put gas in mine unless it is mixed with...
I have one of each, a 1969 Kaiser Jeep W/W and a 1998 A3 W/W. They are different vehicles. I prefer the A2, because it has a manual transmission, is multifuel and much easier to start. Parts are also much more common. I also drove A1s and A2s in the Army years ago so I'have a history with...
Most states will issue a temporary tag to bring it home. This would be issued by your home state. The state the truck is located in will do nothing to help you. I have picked up two deuces and driven them home to Georgia, one located in PA and the other in WI. In both cases, although I had...
I just found out that although GM says that Dexron VI is backwards compatible with all ATF applications requiring a previoous version of Dexron, Allison apparently says that Dexron may not be compatible with some seals in older Allison transmissions and that if TranSynd is not available, an ATF...
I just measured the width of my M149A2. The width from outside of studs is 81-1/2 and the width from outside of bottom of tire bulge is 78 inches. Do you need the length? When I recovered my water buffalo, I pulled it home with my F-150 without problems. I used a pintle hitch with a...
Thanks very much for the help. $25.00 was dontated.
Any idea as to why the rear axle tags had dates of 1/23/98 and 1/26/98? I'm wondering if the truck was manufactured early in 98 but still counted in the 1997 tally. With such low miles, it's hard to believe the rear axles were changed out...
Welcome to Steel Soldiers and congratulations on getting your Deuce. Make sure to post pictures when you pick it up. Download the TMs and read the Operators Manual thoroughly if you haven't driven a deuce before.
In the Army they taught us that if there was a tactical emergency and eggs were available, to put two eggs in the radiator. As the egg material leaks out of the hole, it seals it off very quickly. However, I can't imagine the mess that would make of the cooling system.
As hndrsonj stated...
A lot of people seem to be hesitant to try to start their Deuce in cold weather. If you don't need the truck, then don't start it. However, we need to remember these are tactical vehicles designed to operate in all kinds of weather, including extreme cold. Properly maintained Deuces will...
Leaving a battery charger hooked up all night does two things. Obviously, it charges the battery. It also warms the battery from the chemical reaction taking place in the cells from the charging process. A warm battery makes a lot of difference.
When in the Army, we routinely started Deuces at even colder temperatures. If you have good batteries and either a manifold heater or ether system, you should not have a problem. One thing I learned in the Army was to turn on the headlights for a few minutes before trying to start the vehicle...
The multifuel engine does not have glow plugs. The high compression makes this engine relatively easy to start and they come with either a manifold heater or ether injection system for extreme cold. Many deuces don't come with hot water heaters. Living where you do, make sure yours has a...
Dexron is a product licensed by GM. All Dexron III licensing expired at the end of 2006. Dexron VI is the current Dexron product and is backwards compatible with all ATF applications requiring a previous version of Dexron. That being said, I am going to change out the fluid in my A3's Allison...
