I appreciate all the ideas. One reason I like these trucks is that they can be worked on by the owner and with the experience here on this site, just about any problem can be diagnosed.
I read the thread on fuel additives and decided to add more 2 stroke lube. I went with 1 oz per gal of diesel. I went under the truck to hear the flex plate and thought it might be getting quiter. I had disconnected the cold advance and it did idle much rougher at startup and was somewhat harder...
I had a problem with a set of new glow plugs. My connection at each plug was not good, I tried bending them so they would fit tighter without success so I replaced them all so they are tight, and it ended my problem. One bad connection is all it can take to start burning them all out. My first...
I disconnected the green wires at the IP, thinking this would disable the cold advance. I can't really tell a difference at idle, but the truck was fairly warm at the time. I'm going to have to take it out on the road to see if the rattle intensity has changed. It still does alot more rattling...
The marks line up on the IP and housing, but looking at it, where is the cold advance and how is it checked? Is it the green wire? The green wire goes to the IP then to the high idle solenoid. Will unplugging the green wire disable the cold advance? Can the cold advance be stuck on where...
Mangus, Can you describe what is going on with the flexplate that causes the heavy rattle on acceleration? and what I should check for? The truck starts fine, I haven't had any starter problems or noticed any unusual sounds during startup.
Thanks
I should add that the truck starts easily. I didn't think it would start very well if there was a leak and I was getting air in the fuel line. It idles, coasts and decelerates smoothly as long as my foot isn't on the gas pedal. Rattles like hell when accelerating at any rate. I'll check to see...
My M1008 rattles like dry marbles in a tin can on acceleration. Let off the throttle at any speed or idle and its quiet or at least the rattle isn't there. This does not sound like my M1009. I haven't run the truck much at all probably only 200 miles, I have changed the oil so I know its fresh...
I use delo 400. I buy it in the gallon jugs. I've started using 2cycle premix added to the fuel. I used to use Power Service, but changed due to cost and I figure that for the same ammount of product I get more lubrication with the premix oil, I don't need the anti-gelling agent here in Oregon...
My mistake, the truck did indeed have a shim in there(changed starter over a year ago). I removed it, started the truck and it sounded much better, the high pitch noise is gone. This subject probably was covered before but I couldn't find very much. Thanks again!
I have a direct drive in my M1009 daily driver. I had it replaced because it developed a dead spot and it was turning slow. The new one I put in spins the engine very fast, it is also direct drive, but it makes a high pitch gear noise type sound that I hadn't heard before, but there are no shims...
What is the advantage of gear drive? Does it put less strain on the starter bolts? Do they run faster? or require less amps?
I have seen no shim starters and starters that don't say one way or another. How can you tell if you need the shim or not?
I also read some people are afraid of the gear...
Will the truck start with an alternator removed totally and not just burned out, as long as the batterys have sufficient charge? Curious if the truck can be moved in an emergency.
Pencil eraser? I can see where that would work. I definately would not put a drill bit, punch or anything else up there that could bugger up the threads accidently, unless the threads are already messed up and its stuck. I think I used an ice pick on mine and not a screwdriver as I said in my...
That broken bolt up there has nothing holding it if the threads aren't screwed up. Just stick a screwdriver up there, find a rough spot where it broke and spin it out. The piece is probably about an inch long.
Not for a restoration but what do you use as a economical preservative for the wood deck on your car hauler or equipment trailer? The oak planks on my trailer are looking weathered and I would like them to last a few more years.
Thanks
