you will want this part. you are right it's not a kit. you have to buy the base/oring and then the filter is seperate, as you can use any number of filters on it as others have pointed out.

no can do. you have to have the sprag working in this transfer case if you want fwd. you could, if you had deep enough pockets, replace the stock one with something else but I'm willing to bet you will pay more for the case than you did your truck.

I like it when I find rust dust in things that should be moving. make sure to replace all (5) your rubber flex lines too.

the only difference I know of between early and late is the breather tube(road draft tube) dumps to the ground on the early ones and back into the intake on the late ones. IMO if you are at a cummins store/shop and they can't look up your parts by the model number you might be in the wrong...
