The first thing I would do is remove the magnetic drain plug and spread the stuff stuck to the magnet on a clean white piece of cloth, let the oil soak in and see what is left. that will tell you if your suspicion is correct, if it is then disassembly will be needed to determine the failure...
Well I was bored so I looked at the TM I directed to you and spotted a mistake in the truth tables

You did not state the model/serial number of your truck is but the turn signal wiring is pretty much identical across the HMMWV line...

IIRC you can measure the shaft dia. interesting though I thought those shields on the steering arms were only on the 12K hubs, snap a couple pics of the plunge (inside) of the shafts.
