It is now some 6 hours later and I still cannot wipe the stupid grin off my face! So happy the rebuild resulted in an engine that starts and runs! Not even the comment "yes, but let's see for how LONG she runs!" manages to depress me!
Here is VIDEO #1: cranking and oil pressure gauge: https://youtu.be/ilrVbn1CHi0
Here is VIDEO #2: cranking until she fires up and brief run: https://youtu.be/sCXQx-ljiD4
Oil pressure at cranking hit 60 psi, I used a manual transfer pump plumbed between the jerry can and the fuel filter to...
Riddle solved - perhaps it helps somone else:
- the solenoid will NOT engage and the starter motor will NOT run, unless negative is hooked up to the lug on the starter motor part.
- clamping negative to the starter housing or to the engine block is NOT sufficient - the starter needs negative...
I tried turning the engine over with the starter - no dice.
I thought the Prestolite was maybe defective, so I swapped it for the Lees-Grenville from the other engine. Still no dice. Does not click, does not turn over. This tells me that I am likely the problem. Here are pictures of my setup...
This is the "not-quite-rebuilt-but-more-than-refreshed"-LDS that will be ground hopped very soon and goes into my Deuce (provided it runs as it should)! I can't wait! I cleaned and painted along the way, all hoses etc. are new, D-turbo is new and I did the little nice things, such as brass nuts...
Yes, put it in gear (2nd I think...just moved the big rearmost gear).
I used a homemade alignment tool (deep 3/8 socket on extension inside a deep 1/2 impact socket, wrapped with tape) that fits very tightly inside the splines. I also checked the half-circle holes in the flex disc around the...
While it works, it also makes a mess. A local mechanic told me that they soak a few sheets of toilet paper (unused, I believe) in water and pack the bushing and the cavity behind it with the wet fuzz, then take a tight fitting bolt, stick it into the bushing and whack the bolt. Same principle as...
Update: Staring at it or the cold beverage or both did indeed help.....not one bit. But:
- I used a leveling bar on the busted shop crane (it still holds weight, just doesn't lift anymore)
- this made it easy to accurately align the tranny and get the splined section in...within ten minutes!
-...
When a rear axle is dumping gear oil all over the inside of a rim and tire! Wheel bearings are grease lubricated and have a seal system in place to keep grease in and oil and dirt out.
Mating transmission to engine - rant - and solutions
Allright, I knew it was going to take some effort, but this turned out to be less than not fun.
After struggling for almost an hour, I could finally get the splines to slide into the clutch plate hub. The pilot bushing? No dice. Took...
Not too much uptake on your question....
If you put this line into your Google search field, you get a number of good threads to get started (no pun intended!) :
M35A2 no start site:steelsoldiers.com
A diesel just needs air, fuel and compression to start and run. You may be getting fuel (good)...
Ground hopping my LDS - starter hookup issue
Almost there...
- want to hook up the tranny as well to test as a unit
- front engine mount and radiator mounted (no fan)
- will fill with water and Cascade for first run
- John Deere break-in oil 10W-30 standing by
Jumping the starter - here is...
Can you show us how the alternator is wired up to the truck? The alternator has a sensing input that tells the regulator how much charge current is required. Others will chime in but usually it is the wire going to the "S" post on the alternator.
A new out-of-the-box alternator overcharging may...
Beware of roaming redneck farmers....they see something like that and have the urge to cut the frame off and make it into something they can pull behind a tractor!!
I hope the powder coating came out the way you wanted. I am with you on the frustration when outsourced work that you have to pay for does not happen as planned! At least you know that you have sufficient paint thickness on the hard top! :-)
Have you had any luck adjusting the linkage for the transfer case (high/low)?
There are new/rebuilt/good takeout air shift transfer cases out there. If adjusting the linkage does not give you low range, I suggest you source a replacement TC. If you are eager, you can later rebuild yours as a...
If you have to, the best way is with a buddy. One person in the cab, cranking her over, the other giving a puff of ether into the air intake. I would take the intake mushroom and air filter off and spray directly into the engine intake. Ether must be used with the engine cranking so that all...
With the light switch set to power the lights, does connecting the two wires at the switch result in the lights coming on? If not, you may have a wiring issue. You did check the lightbulbs?
