MIG weld on clean, well prepared joints is always the best and safest way to go, IMHO.
If in doubt with materials or method, weld a...
Yes, that is a way, of course, if all you want is just one speed or N, in this case it would be LOW, that is 2/3rds of engine speed and same direction of rotation. Also, plugging that reverse shaft hole with the already existant closed-end bearing wouldn't be a problem, either.
Question is: is...
Very understandable... although not clear why you want to remove the guard completely? Any of the 4 lower bolt holes go all the way through to the inside. Usually I unscrew the inner/rear bolt to check for water.

Please...!, may I suggest informing yourself a bit more about MPT tires and wheels, before posting such statements?
After that and and maybe a closer look at the rim of that particular custom built wheel...
Minimum acceptable lenght for (any type) hex cap screws there, with the spring washer, is 7/8".
Try them on - you will see they will fit only in the 12-, 2- and eventually the 4- o'clock position... and in one of them you could barely get a 5/8" long bolt in....

FWIW: Yes, I had to learn this lesson about 15 years ago.... when I found out that these engines actually do start AND run AND smoke a lot with the crank 360º off...! And all the symptoms described here were exactly the same.... !!!
Only reason I kept quiet is because it couldn't be just...

No word about if the rear axles on the A3 where modified also, for the new seals.... ???

Personally I have no experience with installing these in 5tons. Possibly easier due to more work space between tranny and frame on the right side?
Trouble.....? Just keep in mind that the backlash needs to be checked and adjusted by selecting the correct gasket thickness. If you are real lucky...
Don't know.... being this is your first one, probably half a day?
Most certainly you already did your search homework....? like reading this one: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?28463-pto-rebuild.html
