Managed to get a few things done last week when the weather was a little cooler... Posts for the Convoy Lights bolted to the back of the truck and the rotating beacons were powered up for the first time. Sadly, only 3 of 4 bulbs work. Guess that one got beat up in transit on the way here...

Definitely a neat truck!
Happy to hear that the "Death Wobble" cleared up with new tires.
Somehow or other I was expecting to hear something about the steering box having worn parts.
At one point in my life, I had a John Deere Model 40 (Single Row Crop Cultivator, Similar to the 8n Ford)...

Seems too that a metal line would fade the heat more quickly than rubber hose.
With a metal line properly anchored to the frame, heat would radiate through that connection too.
The M1089 has steel lines that feed and return hydraulic fluid.
Those hard lines run almost half the length of...

You are definitely right dbduchene - and this group will support your ideas (yeah, and the dreams too)!
I do have to say that in every discussion we have, ideas will be "simple to do" and there will be those "really bad idea" answers too. Me personally, I think that is the magic of this...

I almost wonder if some of the survival school teachings for capturing water could be used?
In a long encampment, you could setup a water capture. Things done with low effort using something on top of the habitat (may not work because of solar arrays). Captured water could go into...

Congrats on your new to you truck!
Read up on some of the TM's to pass the time. That will help your "truck vocabulary" and help you learn things you will need to know when you have something to wrench on. :)

I remember the high school days where daddy would buy the car for (insert name here) and claim to have done the work. It would be obvious they knew nothing.
Had more fun than could be bought when everyone was standing around looking at the motor - and I would reach down and pop all the...

Yeah. That happens. Guess that is why all my projects take more time than I ever seem to plan for. Between the wallet and getting older, things take more time and effort. THANKFULLY my dad didn't pay for my toys. He sure enjoyed working on projects with me though!

Crummy part is that the crackheads that steal diesel have found a way around the locking cap. A determined crackhead with an ice pick pops a hole in the tank, takes 5 gallons and the other 40 gets dumped on the ground. Me personally - I wouldn't have enough "umph" to force a pick through...

Good deal! You should be in good shape to build your own... Don't let the diesel part stress you too much. Oil and Filter changes are much the same and threads here will help you do those operations.
Asking questions will help, and ultimately with a CAT dealer always a possibility...

Welcome to Steel Soldiers and Congratulations on your retirement!
There are lots of discussion threads about building a habitat on the back of a 10xx Stewart & Stevenson truck. We even have a nearly finished truck in the MVoTM (Military Truck of The Month) competition. Maybe you could cast...

Whatever you have will not be rated high enough if you are sitting behind that door and something hot is coming your way! I personally have never been on the "shot at side" of a door before. Hope I never get to have that experience in the future either!
On the other hand, reading the...

Neat. The M1088 drags that trailer pretty well - at least empty. The CAT 3126 feels fairly strong. The exhaust brake makes a really big difference too when it is time to stop. Only thing that bugs me a bit is that the jacks are not tall enough to raise mine high enough without "cheaters"...
