This project is taking longer than I intended for it to be with work, kids sports and life in general getting in the way. Considering the work that's gone into it for general maintenance, new parts, etc - she ain't bad. Just a recap, but I used a cheap HF HVLP gun that I opened up with a 5/64" drill bit so that I could shoot the paint unthinned.

I'm gonna try and get the turret assembled tomorrow.

Has anyone painted an engine block with Behr Marquee? These LDT’s run pretty cool. Wondering if it would hold up. Latex starts to degrade at 256 degrees F.
Yes, I painted a deuce once that was a full inside and out job. The heat didn't affect it as much as fluid seepage which got under the paint. With the fan constantly blowing and the block surface hot it eventually peeled. Nature of the beast.

Great info here. Glad to see there's at least ONE project that will be "cheap" on my HMMWV. After several pages of reading within a 61pg thread....... what's the best way to prep before painting with the Behr? I'm assuming you can paint right over top of the existing CARC (i.e., no primer needed) as long as proper prep has been done, yeah?

I've painted a couple vehicles - 5 tons and CUCVs.

I just took a 240 grit orbital and did a once over. I use grease or oil on the windows, mirrors, lights, etc. and go to town.

Only place I ever had any peeling paint was on the door sill where I stepped on it 10x a day, and on my M1031 where I didn't degrease the fuel fill area and it flaked off in about 2-3 years in a small almost unnoticeable area.

While you can sand it, you don't necessarily have to. It really just depends on the truck. I've done some where the paint was pristine, but faded and others where it's clear there wasn't much prep work before even the CARC was put down. The CARC is a great base layer to paint over. if it's adhering good. The key thing is clean, clean, clean and when you think you're done, clean it again. I pressure wash to knock as much dirt off of it as I can. It's everywhere on these things. I'm a big believer in Purple Power for degreasing as well. Knock off any peeling paint, sand those areas if you'd like just to knock any hard edges, etc.

I use paper and blue painter's tape on the windshields and to protect any surfaces from paint. I've found that I do a better job if I paint things individually instead of with everything still mounted on the truck. It lessens the chance I'll miss things, and it gives me a more professional finished product.

Ok, gotcha. That's more or less what I had in mind. Considered the grease trick too as that's what we used to do with R/C race cars but hadn't tried that one full scale yet. Good info.
