For preparing the aircraft ready to fly need up to 30 people ground specialists.
Sometimes air patrols carried out in neutral airspace. In such cases, our aircraft are often accompanied by NATO fighter-interceptors. Squadron commander Alexander Khabarov says that sometimes other people's planes come too close ("lie on the wing"), then our pilots include afterburner and NATO pilots are upset because their fighter not has extra fuel tanks and they can not go long on supersonic speed over White Swan...

The B-1B has the same abilities. My friend worked on the "Bone" and talked a lot about them being able to leave F-15s in the dust for the same reason. And how it would take 1 hour and 20 minutes to cut one bulkhead out to restore the bomb bay of the B-1B to it's pre-treaty capacity...

"Sanguine": at its zenith

The development of laser weapons in the NGO "Astrophysics" was fast pace, and in 1983 was put into service l "sanguine." Its main difference from the "Stiletto" was that battle that the laser induced on the target without the use of large mirrors. Simplification of the optical system had a positive effect on the killing power of weapons. But the most important improvement was the increased mobility of the laser in the vertical plane. "Sanguine" was intended to defeat electro-optical systems, air targets.

Specially designed for the complex system of permits allowed him to successfully shot to shoot at moving targets. In tests SLK "sanguine" demonstrated ability to consistently identify and destroy the optical system of the helicopter at ranges over 10 km. At short distances (up to 8 km), the device is completely incapacitate enemy sights and at extreme distances of dazzle them for tens of minutes.

Laser system, "sanguine" was mounted on the chassis of self-propelled antiaircraft unit "Shilka". In addition to combat laser turret mounted low-power probe laser and the receiver tracking system, fixing the reflection of the beam of the glare object.

Three years after the "sanguine" arsenal of the Soviet army replenished ship laser complex "Aquilon" to the principle of similar land SLK. Sea-based is an important advantage over ground: the energy system of a warship can provide much more power to the pump laser. So, you can increase capacity and rate of fire guns. Complex "Aquilon" intended to defeat electro-optical systems, the Coast Guard of the enemy.

"Behemoth," "Hippo-2" - Soviet military exercises in the Barents Sea, purpose of which was launch 16 ICBMs (all nuclear missile on submarine) with a minimum spacing between missiles (up to 20 seconds) from a submarine submerged.

launch a full of ammunition set of 16 ICBMs makes submarine K-407 "Novomoskovsk" in operation "Hippo-2" in 21 hours 9 minutes August 6, 1991.
As of June 2011 this operation remains unsurpassed, is a military-technical the world record (maximum salvo make of the American nuclear submarine "Ohio" - 4 missiles Trident-2) . During the exercise was tested model the tactics of the use of weapons intended for the beginning of a global nuclear war.
Before or after operation "Hippo-2" was not made is so massive launch ICBM from a submarine anywhere in the world . Up to this point, the maximum number of rockets fired from the boat launch was - 8 psc: December 20, 1969 on board the K-140 project 667A "Navaga" was carried out two series of missile launches four missiles with a short interval.

Before the collapse of the Soviet Union was 10 days ...

The Israelis have a similar system for burning optics. I forget the name and my google luck seems to be gone. I know one is aircraft mounted and designed to destroy optics on IR missiles.

The Navy/Air Force has a few new FEL toys that are quite impressive. ABL has languished because the chemical laser has been surpassed. I'm guessing they are waiting for one of the new reactors... like Polywell WB9... to come on line to feed them. (As well as the rail guns)

The tech has outpaced the military procurement at an increasing rate. Things have to change.

The multi-missile launch excercise video is quite impressive.

In practice, all functions were typically tested only to the point of rocket engine ignition.

I had the privilege of going to sea to observe an announced single-missile test-launch from a sub-surface platform in the late 1970's. We were stationed about as far from the submerged Soviet sub as was the ship those videos were taken from. It was visually impressive, but audibly awesome - even from several miles away. The telemetry that was intercepted was also outstanding and enlightening to our intelligence services.

Thank you for sharing that video. It brought back some great memories.

BTW - I had not realized until that time just how far off the "coast" that our US Coast Guard ships would cruise. I was surprised that a Coast Guard vessel was dispatched for Intell intercept and observation duty rather than a naval ship. Because the launch was pre-announced, there were MANY ships on station of various nationalities to see the event.

Thanks again!
